5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This just seems so simple but it isn't. With prices as they are I thought it might be time for a locking gas cap. The standard is Stant in my book so I look it up in their catalog, jot down the number, and go shopping. The neighborhood O'Reillys doesn't stock Stant but has the next best thing. The guy tells me though that they are a POS and don't work. Sure enough, I can lock the cap but it can be unscrewed anyway. Next stop is Pep Boys. They carry Stant but are out of this number. None in the warehouse. Now to Autozone where they have another copy of the same one that didn't work at O'Reillys. Finally, NAPA. They have their brand. I tell the guy my story so we both go out and try out the latest version. It too will lock but with only a little downward pressure it spins open as well. Surely, I'm not the only guy here who has looked at locking caps, right? Has anyone found one for Gen 6 that will actually lock? This is pretty disappointing, really. I'm presuming that Toyota will only have the cheapest aftermarket stuff since it isn't a factory item.

but maybe you have a lowered car with skirts and the douchebags can't slip a jack under the car. the locking gas cap would be a nice extra...
If you're smart thief, you'll move on to the next car. Its not like your car is filled with gas that is made of gold. If they cant get to your car, they'll move onto some other poor saps car and syphen the gas from them.
Why not just put bulletproof protective cover all around your gas tank and put a padlock on the gas door.

that's another good point. heck, if were a theif, i'd go for all the trucks and vans anyways, since they usually have more than 20 gallons.
but i just didn't want the op to get discouraged on this.
Doesn't all Camry's have locking fuel doors? My 06 has a locking fuel door i guess if theives really wanted to get to the gas they could just break it open however i have some security with the fuel door being locked.

The door has to be opened from the inside, so that part is locked, although it's very easy to pry it open with a screw driver. What the OP is referring to (I believe), is the actual gas cap.
I found a Stant across town at another Pep Boys and it seems to work better than the other off brands that I found.Still can be opened when locked but you have to push just right. The Camry has a locking fuel door but it is locked with a plastic pin that is easily broken. I'm guessing nobody is going to want to crawl under the car when there are pickups in the neighborhood that are a lot easier to pilfer. Anyway, if they poke a hole in the tank my insurance company will buy a new one, but I doubt they are going to fill the tank if the fuel is siphoned.

If someone wants your gas....they can get it. I rather let them have it more easily than having them messing up the entire car to get to it. I think the locking door is more efficient that nobody puts some crap into your tank to piss you off....like teenagers who think its cool to put sugar into the neighbors car ...
Whats the point? Those who will really want your gas will probably just puncture a hole in your gas tank and get gas there.
That is exactly what is happening in my hometown. 16 cars this past week alone. It would be cheaper to put in more gas than to replace the tank.
My dog guards my cars at night from gas thieves and CATS.

Ya this gas stealing is getting bigger... My friend had his dodge ram's gas lines cut. Their definitely trying to hit cars with large gas tanks and easy to get underneath.
