Gen6 Constant 12v at lighter?

I also posted this on the Hybrid board so I hope I don't get slapped. Please point me to the correct location if this has been discussed before.

In our 4Runner, the cigarette lighters were only on when the ACC was on (or vehicle on). This makes it problematic for my wife to be able to charge her phone at times. For our 4Runner I found a mod to enable this. It is a simple matter of replacing the relay for the lighter(s) with a straight wire. The circuit is fused before the relay so a straight wire is no problem.

If someone can find out where the equivalent relay is in the Hybrid ('09 for us) then this mod can be done. It is probably similar for the other 6th Gen's. Any help is appreciated.

There is no cigarette lighter on mine. There are two outlets that size but I have not tested them to see when they are on. There should be one in the cubby where the aux in is and one near the arm rest on the console.

Sorry, dating myself on the cigarette lighter part. I do mean the 12v outlets in the locations you mentioned.

OK, I checked them with my VOM and NO they are not on all the time. They both come on when the key is in the Acc or On position. Sorry.

Thanks. I was aware of that, I am hoping that someone can find where the relay is that controls that via the ACC (or ON) position.

Just get a piece of wire and connect one end to the supply side of one of the constant on circuits in the fuse panel and then connect the other side to the supply side of the outlet fuse. That way you have constant power and still fused.

Alternatively, you could use one of those add a circuit thingys instead of a jumper wire.

That is a solution but I was hoping to find a 'cleaner' solution such as the one that the 4Runner people found out. It is a simple matter of replacing the relay with a stub of wire right at the fuse block location. The hard matter is finding the relay.

That relay might act as a delay. So when U replace it with a strait wire it just mean have it permanently ON.

But on most car, once the key is off the ACC the power to the lighter is kill right away. The Stereo Receiver do have a permanent power wire and of cause with this solution U need to do the wiring work.

If U do jump the relay using the fuse box, that might also power the Stereo and everything to permanent ON.

But be warn, the reason why they kill the power to the lighter is so any device connected won't kill the car battery. And also, she shouldn't leave her cell in the car. The better way is to get her an extended battery so one charge at night will run her the entire day.

Here is a link to Camry stuff that might help http://camrystuff.com/index.php?page=Gen6_Manuals

+1. Good post. It is a GOOD idea that the outlet shuts off. Cell phone batteries are WAY cheaper than car batteries, lol.

I do agree. This does give me something to think about. Thanks for giving a valid alternate point and thanks for the link.
