Now it performs poorly compared to new units that are out there, and radar/laser guns have become much more advanced. Take a look at Cheetah products (PASS, LPP) or Laser Interceptor for laser. For radar, your best bet is Valentine One. If you want an all-in-one system for radar/laser that you can stealth install, look at the Escort products, particularly the 9500i radar and ZR4 laser shifter.

K40 isn't even good for CB antennas. I have the test equipment to prove it.
I would beg to differ. Relative to competitive offerings for the consumer, they are top 5 or so. There is better, but the average Joe can not acquire them for a price similar to that of a K40 offering.

i was on a trip out of state about a week ago. we had 3 radars in the car to see which one works better. a escort passport 8500 x50, a escort passport 9500i, and the valentine one. the valentine one would pick up more "false alarms" then the passports. the passports were good but they suck because they dont tell you which way the band is coming from so it leaves you looking and guessing like any other radar...except the valentine one that points to it. the 9500 is good at remembering where the "false alarms" were after "marking" because of the gps in it, but pointless when you are on a trip. the 8500 was still ok but it is out dated compared to its brother the 9500. i like the 9500i out of all of them.

I just know what my NetTek tells me, and I've swept a couple of K40's offerings (yeah, yeah... $30K test set sweeping a chicken band antenna)... I tend to have the best luck with the K.I.S.S. approach - usually a basic RadiallLarsen NMO27. But yes, a consumer would have a more difficult time buying something from Radiall, versus K40/Wilson/etc. available at every truckstop. Whee, threadjack.
Back on topic: With the V1, regarding the false alerts, you can program them. I generally lock out X-band while in town... I've not seen anyone in my area using an X-band radar in a very long time. In Logic mode (big L) with X disabled, about the only thing that falses mine is door openers and the occasional Passport (they generate KA spurs). Running a V1 side-by-side with a Passport is NOT a good test - the LO of the Passports get into the V1s, which are significantly more robust from an RF standpoint. Newer V1s will actually identify Junk (J) when they false KA, and then determine the hit to be another detector.
I also prefer V1 because I've talked with Mike Valentine on more than one occasion, and it's quite clear that he knows his stuff.

How did you verify the 'false alarms'? It could simply be a source that you were unable to visibly verify, but still a real radar emitter. Just because you didn't see a cruiser doesn't mean it was a false alarm. As for the GPS, only a fool would rely on that (no offense). Look at it this way, the police have access to the same "lists" so they can set up a trap in the 'known false alarm' zone and pick you off like flies without wings.
Never forget about the Polish fire chief. When hosting an open house, a news reporter asked about the broken down fire truck in garage 3. He replied "That one is only for false alarms, so we don't bother fixing it"

the v1 would pick up the cars that were next to us that had cheap radars, deer spoters, or something that was making the v1 go off (pointing at the cars the whole time even while passing it). almost all cops here in Tenn. use the Ka band in the cruisers and the speed trap signs. "false alarms" like the grocery stores here set the radars off with a K band...so we "mark" the K bands with the gps knowing where the "false alarms" are. if you ride by the same place over and over everyday and the radar gos off everytime in the same spot...you already know its a false alarm. so "set it and forget it" lol

Don't forget about it...like I said, the highway traffic enforcement officers pay attention to this stuff and will set up a trap there.
Thank god detectors are illegal in VA. I haven't had one in 9 years and simply pay more attention to my driving environment.
