smoke during start up

Hi all,

I have a 2002 camry 4 cylinder XLE- great shape 165000 km.
I recently noticed that during start up, there is a small plume of smoke (oil burning??). I only see this during start up in the morning when the car has been sitting overnight. I don't notice this during the day.
There are no external leaks.
Could this be that the pcv valve needs to be changed? If so, how do you do it?
Or was there too much oil in the engine?
Appreciate your help?
thanks
Tim

Hi
so would it cost too much to fix? Should I just leave it or will it get worse.

Its a typical problem. Most of them do it. It dos not need immediate attention. Just make sure you keep the oil at recommended level.

As stated, if you are not seeing any noticeable drop on the dip stick then the engine isn't using much oil. Valve stem leakage is nothing to be concerned about until it starts burning more during operation. By the time it's time to really worry, it's also time for a valve job or worse and then you fix it. If you do a lot of high speed driving and the oil level drops quickly, then you might have a PVC issue, but otherwise not likely. Pull it and spray some carb cleaner in it if you are inclined.

Hi many Thanks
will probably just leave it.. only use car to jump around the city (no long distance)
just hope that this wont cause problems passing the emissions test every two years as we have to do this in Ontario

As stated above, the valve seals are starting to leak. I wouldn't fix it unless you start using a lot of oil.

Valve stem seals usually wear much quicker in cars that aren't maintained properly.
