5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
UPDATE 01:
I went to the dealer on Monday morning and was told I need a new tranny. I have to pay for alignment because some sort of sub-frame needs to be dropped. However, I will gladly pay the $90 alignment since I'm escaping the 4-digit cost of a new tranny. I was told the car would be ready either on Wednesday or Thursday.
UPDATE 02:
I was on the phone with the dealer on Tuesday. It was confirmed explicitly that I am receiving a NEW tranny, and NOT a reconditioned one. I specifically asked about this. Apparently yesterday the new tranny did arrive and I was told that work was being performed at that moment with it (this was in the afternoon).
UPDATE 03:
I was at the dealer in person an hour ago today (Wednesday) and I saw my car being worked on. The sub-frame is off and the engine is suspended with chains. The old tranny is out and in the trash somewhere. They had a new tranny on this wheeled cart thing.
I've been invited to take delivery at around 4 or 5PM tomorrow afternoon! I asked about break-in procedures, but I was told to just drive normally.
UPDATE 04:
I called the dealer just now at 2:30PM and the new tranny is in! They are going to perform alignment right now and they told me to come at 4:30PM to take delivery of my (hopefully) healthy Camry! I will report back over the weekend on how the new tranny feels and if the flares exist. Thank you guys for the support!
UPDATE 05:
I picked up my car on Friday at 6PM just before they closed. Here are my impressions:
Idles rougher. When waiting at a stop light in D, I get some more vibration that before.
Shifts faster.
Does not slip (I simply cannot make this transmission slip like the old in 2-3 and 3-4 shifts)!
The 3-4 shift is sometimes a little rough.
Launching the car in 1st gear is simply faster (the tranny engages better).
More power delivered in 2nd gear between 1000 and 3000rpm than before.
The new ECU is different for sure. This tranny likes to shift from 1st to 2nd quicker. In general the car is trying to be more efficient now because it shifts sooner to a lower gear.
In general, I am very pleased with the new transmission and new ECU! The lever works the same way (same resistance, etc). The additional vibration while waiting in D is not a problem. I am VERY pleased with the way this tranny engages. My car feels like it's simply putting down more power, especially in 1st and 2nd gear! No more slippage at all! And honestly the shifts happen faster!
Hey guys, today (June 8) my car's tranny died (at least I think that's what it is). The vehicle is a 2007 SE V6 with the 6-speed manumatic.
Throughout the weekend and today (June 8) everything was operating properly. It was shifting properly, etc.
I stopped around noon today to pick up a sandwich in this one-way street. I got back and started to reverse out of the street at around 10km/h.
In like 2 seconds into the reversing, I felt a slight shudder in the steering wheel, and then the engine revved a bit (because I was giving some gas, but the tranny became disconnected). When I saw the engine was freely revving, I let off the gas. Except at that moment the car shuddered again and the engine simply shut off.
I looked down at my tranny lever and it was still in "R" yet the car continued to roll on backwards. I knocked it into "N" and restarted the engine. No problem - engine ran perfectly. Except when I put it back into "R", the engine again just revved like there was no connection with the tranny.
I coasted to the end of the street on inertia. I restarted the car again in "P". I tried going in "R" and in "D" but simply the car performed as if I was in neutral "N". There is NO connection between engine and tranny!
All the other functions worked perfectly (power brakes, steering, radio, lights, A/C, etc). I had NO warning lights or anything in the instrument panel. The car simply acted in "N" no matter if it was in "R", "D" or "N".
Putting the car in "P" still worked. It kept the car stopped. Usually there is a slight resistance when I put the tranny in "D" or "R" - like you can feel when it engages the gear. Now, there is absolutely no resistance and I can shift the lever through those gears with my pinky.
I had the car towed to Downtown Toyota on Queen and Broadview. Since it's a Sunday, there was nobody to "receive" me so I just locked the car and took a cab home. I'll pop in tomorrow morning to file a warranty claim. Do you guys think I need a new tranny?

I don't know if the tranny fluid was full or not. I've never touched that thing.
I'll see what the dealer says tomorrow. It will be very funny if they would request a road test. Hahaha cuz the only road test you can do is a pushing one.
If the tranny is dead I won't be too surprised or sad. The tranny in my car has lots of flaws such as:
A 800-1500rpm flare when shifting from 2nd to 3rd.
A 500-1000rpm flare when shifting from 3rd to 4th.
A rough 5th to 4th downshift (a kick in the pants).

42000KM (26250M). I'd say my mileage is 50/50 city and highway. Under what circumstance did your tranny die? Was it also a 6-speed unit? What were your symptoms?

It's an automatic. Toyota hasn't installed the Ferrari transmission in the Camry yet.
I wonder how those things are holding up. When I was still with Toyota, they were all under warranty, and the few customers in the area who had one were regularly coming in the shop for accumulators and control units. Mostly accumulators, though. Really cool little bits of tech, but I dunno if owners would be inclined to keep driving them when 2K repair bills are the norm.
You cannot check the transmission fluid on a Gen 6 Camry. It is a sealed system and must be checked by the dealer.
Toyota Camry quality blows right now. I work for Toyota in an IT position and can tell you there are more quality issues with these cars right now [based on seeing certain documents]. I bought one and my master cylinder went at 150 miles and now my tach is going dark at 1,000 miles. If I trade it at the dealer I will take a 2,000 hit.
I wonder where you have lower miles that they might offer you a buy back.

Theres no transmission fluid stick to check on the Gen 6? How would you know if your fluid is ever low? I like having the control on my 06 Camry to pull the stick and check the transmission fluid when i do my oil and other fluid checks.
It is just a horrible feeling (and embarrassed) when your car died on the road. (Been there, done that) So sorry you had to go through this mess. Hopefully Toyota will take care of you. Keep us posted.
