stuck tire valve cap..

got some 5$ aluminum valve caps from part source last summer. Put them on the car and tightened them up by hand. I did tighten them up a bit more so kids wouldnt steal it but now there STUCK!

I tried twisting them off, tried pliers (gonna try a bit harder with them tomorrow) and no dice. The actual stem is turning with the cap! @#%#$@%$#%@!!

Any suggestions?

That's exactly what I was going to say.

That's happened to me before. Just hold the valve stem itself with one pair of pliers and use a wrench to loosen the cap.

Remount the tire so you get new stems? I can't think of anything else since they're aluminum or else I would recomend splitting the cap into two pieces.

I suggest that after you have a tire store break down the tire and install a new valve stem, that you don't tighten your caps so tightly next time.

He's right, do you know that? according to tsb 138473-48928484, use of torque wrench part number TARD-546r5 is recommended for all valve cap installs to avoid your same problem recurrence.

I actually had this same problem.

THe dealer took my caps, and when i asked them why, he stated that alot of the toyotas with TPMS actually end up fuseing / welding the aluminum caps to the valve stem.... sure enough mine look mangled and don't really thread nicely anymore ...

don't know how this happens but i think this is what your are experiencing ... might have to do with corrosion of dissimalar metals if you ask me, not welding .....

i did some research and i guess this was a very common problem. I think i read lexus had some of these caps from factory but got a TSB posted on them about them getting stuck. I guess ill just have to get new valve stems once my exams are done.

I'm sure those kids will laugh their ass off if they see you struggling twisting the caps with pliers...
