5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
it all depends on the maintenance done to the car. Make sure you get all the records of all the services done from the previous owner.
in general, the Gen5 Camry is basically indestructible. Reliability is excellent, gas mileage excellent. Ride quality and etc is great for its price range. I've ridden in my friends Gen5 all the time, and I love it. You won't regret your purchase if you buy the right one. I'm sure any Gen5 owner can chime in and assure you of this.
remember though, its all about maintenance.

I don't think you can go wrong with an '02 I4. That's of course assuming at least some maintenance has been done - which brings up another question, how many miles does it have?
I own an '05 I4 and love it. I can't comment on what RPMs the car runs at at highway speeds though, in '05 the 4-cylinder came with a 5 speed auto compared to the 4 speed auto from '02 to '04. But yep, if the car was taken care of and it's in good shape, i wouldn't hesitate buying it.

yea it hurts my eyes.....damn super bright blinding HID's...
loll +1
To the OP:
I'll admit this as a Gen6 owner, the new cars do not have that great of a reliability record. The 2002 Camry is known for its great reliability. Plus, that 4cyl engine is super strong and can go on hundreds of thousands of miles with the right maintenance.

Probably the one complaint you might have (if it's an LE with discs up front and drums out back) is a mushy brake pedal. It doesn't affect stopping distance and you do get used to it eventually. My '05 isn't perfect but it's better than the '02 I've driven a few times.

I will probably be aiming for a XLE because it comes with a lot more features than the LE. Also, is there a specific model year I should be aiming for? According to JD Power, the 2002 has the best initial quality and overall reliability out of the rest of the 6th gen.
Isn't the 2002 the 6th gen? How come you are all calling it the 5th gen?
I have a 2002 V6. It had 66k i bought it for $15k out the door, 3 years ago. It has 105,000 now, no problems whatsoever. Except i have one suggestion, by all means look for a made-in-japan camry vs a kentucky camry (the VIN will tell you). Mine is the US built and the paint is not nearly as good as the Japan built, the paint is too soft and scratches too easily.
Other than that, this car is close to perfect.
