Folks
this 04 SE model, auto 4cyl is new to me.
112K on the clock, appears to be in top condition but could someone knowledgeable tell me:
- what belts etc call for 100K maintenance? or what IS the interval?
- Valve clearance check? when?
- Auto Trans drain, clean, refill ???? don't want to take chance with that....
- Other required?
- I'm fortunate in that the dealer replaced the Cat with new - so, good to go there...
One brake question: this one has brand new pads front and rear. Since I have not had this car before now, I don't know if this is 'normal': the brake pedal feels a bit fluffy and it makes an odd 'flutter' when you first depress it a little, at speed. say going 40 or 50mph and you just gently tap down on the pedal, it feels like it is pushing back against foot in a sorta fluttery vibe, then feels normal... Also, it takes about, oh, 20 lbs of pressure on the pedal to really do hard braking. is that normal also? my other cars are quicker/firmer than this one.
<< BACK - INTERVALS - NEXT >> Replace engine oil and oil filter 1 Rotate tires Replace engine coolant 2 Visually inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions:
Driving While Towing Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis Driving in Desert or On Dirt Roads Inspect ball joints and dust covers Inspect drive shaft boots Inspect engine air filter Inspect steering linkage and boots Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis Applicable Footnotes:1) Reset the oil replacement reminder (“MAINT REQD”) light after replacing engine oil, if vehicle is equipped with this light.
2) Initial replacement at 100,000 miles/120 months. Replace every 50,000 miles/60 months thereafter. Refer to "Engine Coolant" in the "Explanation of Maintenance Items" section in the back of this guide for more information.
If brake pedal flutter the rotors could be warped.
If the trans fluid was never changed suggest having it done! Same for PS fluid, you can do this yourself using the turkey baster method. Drain PS reservoir using the turkey baster and replace with fresh fluid, do this several time after driving and the fluid will be clean again.
Check brake fluid, if dark might think about changing it.
definitely.
on this car, to do trans, do you just drop the pan, clean off magnets, and replace gasket? is there a filter? is the filter/screen cleanable? I do not plan to flush .... ever.
Any tips on DIY would be greatly welcome.
the brakes do their job very well, no hint of shudder in the car, it brakes very straight and solid. guess its just a quirk.

Have the transmission flushed and filled at your local dealership with Genuine Toyota T-IV. The coolant should also be flushed and filled with Super Long Life PINK. When doing these flushes, do not add any additional additives (e.g. cleaners or conditioners).
I would also replace the serpentine drive belt if it has not been done. The cabin air filter should be replaced as well, it is a commonly overlooked item.
The spark plugs are not due until 120k. I would also flush the brake fluid. Sears does a brake fluid exchange for $35. I have yet to find any place that does it for less.
I ain't doing a flush on this car.
drain yes. flush no.
learn from lexus..........

Flushes work fine as long as additives aren't used. Only plain fluid should be used.
damn skippy. He's right you know. But dont forget this:

The Camry is a car that I can rip out someone's pride, stab it, beat it, and completely bash their egos, and it's so ridiculous that the person comes back with a hysterical laugh... ROFL They got trainlengthed by a Camry that in their mind, was a 18 sec car.
