5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was driving on the highway about 35 mph after some bonehead decided to cut off the guy in front of me, so we both had to slam our breaks. SO i through it into sequential shift (2nd gear). When i shifted it from 2nd to third at about 5500 RPM's. It went up to about 6000 then shifted. It felt like the trans disengaged then shifted. If I'm not mistaken, thats the flare. Later on my way home I'm going to try and manipulate it to do it again. I'm hoping it was just my head, or a freak thing. It has 5000 miles on it.

In terms of the 2-3 shift flare, it's easiest if you were accelerating hard in 2nd. When you reach 3500 or 4000rpm, take your foot off the gas pedal. At the same time, shift up to 3rd.
Leave a split second for the RPMs to go down to like 3000rpm, and then give gas. This should result in a massive 1000rpm - 1500rpm flare before the engine revs down and the tranny catches.
Keep an eye out for a 3-4 flare as well. I just got a new transmission installed because mine completely died. Claim whatever you can under warranty. My new tranny no longer flares.

well, if mine doesn't to it too often, or badly. Ill just leave it. I'm going to try what you just said to see if i can get it to do it. If it does it to that extent, ill go to the dealer

Keep an eye out! When I bought my car brand new, it only did the 3-4 shift flare and it wasn't very severe (500-800rpm). Later on, it stopped doing this, but I developed the 2-3 flare. At first it was a 1000rpm flare which happened frequently. Later it started happening so frequently that I could reproduce it almost every time on demand with up to 1500rpm! And the 3-4 flare returned from time to time. Also I developed a rough 5-4 downshift.

Question about these transmission flares. Do these flares occur while in automatic drive mode? or while in sequential shift mode? I hardly use the sequential shift mode so not sure if my tranny flares or not. It seems fine in automatic drive mode though.

They occur in both, but moreso in S mode (manual mode). Thanks, Camralon!
