License Plate Illumination - What is the purpose of this?

So Im driving my Camry at night the other day, and as Im parking in my driveway. I get out and take a look outside just to see how the car looks.

I notice at the back with the license plate, that it is illuminated and lighted up in the night. This is the first time Ive seen this and didnt even know the Camry came equipped like that.

I did a search and just found posts asking for LED lights or how to add mods to it, so Im just going to ask here. Is there any other purpose of this function other than to have your license plate light up?

Because Id rather not have those, and just take it off (a 5-minute procedure from a post I read). Agreed with others.

Is it OK to just take these lights off? I'm afraid if anything weird will happen afterwards, thats all.

illegal to have them on? or illegal to have them off?

reason is that id rather have my car blend in at night with the other cars, rather than sticking out (personal preference)

besides, isnt it Normal for cars not to have license plate lights in the first place?

its always been the two rear red lights on stock cars from what ive seen

^ Ah....what are you smoking dude? All cars in the USA are required to have them. It is the law. You get a fix-it ticket easily if you don't have them on.

Also, I'm quite confused as in "illuminated" Are you saying it's glowing or are you talking about the license plate bulbs?

The license plate is lighted up, so that when you're doing a dumb illegal activity, people can actually see your licenseplate at night and write it down. Also when cops pull you over, they can see your illuminated licenseplate and run it through their database.

Your illuminated license plate is for the best of everyone. If you disable it, you will get a ticket instantly. You want your car to blend in? keep the lights. If do not have your rear license plate lighted up, you will be pulled over.

and another thing, all cars have illuminated licenseplate.

btw, welcome to TN :]

the license plate lights comes standard with ANY manufactured car.

and yes, it is illegal to have them off. you could also get pulled over just for having a busted license plate light.

I guess neither.

If he cant notice a thing like that while driving, I dont know if I'm safe on the road.

Thats like my co-worker. He only knows how to look straight when driving. Doesnt use mirrors and doesnt look around. Just looks straight. Thank god that he's a cheap arse and stingy cuz he has no car. Than again, his logics are ridiculously stupid..so I'm hoping he's only kidding

If you take the lights off, cops will think that you're hiding something... like driving a stolen car, etc., etc.

Here in my area they're crazy about license plates, front and rear.

Let me tell you a story,

One time my friend bought a new car, he turned that "brand new car" plate over, so the white is facing up instead. Then he got pulled over and got a ticket, and things got kind of ugly from there, you have to show the paperwork, proof of insurance, etc., etc. It's just stupid, you know.

So my suggestion to you is, leave it alone, it won't blind anybody, unless you put HID's in it.

I hope the original poster made this thread as a joke. If not, I'm so very sorry for your ignorance.

How about the Backup light? That's where I'm thinking putting a HID.

a lot of terrible ideas here ... but anyways, someone should close this thread because its ridiculous

the lights are required by law, and are on every car in the country unless they were illegally removed
