Hi all,
I own an 08 Highlander and I am in the market to purchase a new car for my wife. I'm looking at both the Camry SE and the Maxima SE. Anyone have any experiences with both? Thanks!

I just bought my wife a 09 Camry LE V6. I have an 07 with the same specs. I still think it's the best deal and the better looking car. The Maxima body looks a bit dated to me. I also think the Camry is a better quality car too, and it gets great gas mileage. The HP to MPG ratio is fantastic on the V6.
my 2000 Maxima 5spd stick shift has better build quality than the new camry. Nothing on that car rattles so far, even with 115K miles. My Camry's dash and door panels rattle now lol, gotta get that fixed
I went 450miles mixed highway and city driving with my V6 Maxima. I don't know what it is at now with the newer models (MPG wise). Plus, it costs less to fill up my 2000 maxima? weird.. I pay 68 bucks last night for the maxima. Last week, I paid 75 bucks for the camry.
Don't mistake me, I love my Camry to death. But w/ my experience from the Maxima, I'd say the Maxima is a better looking, better interior quality, and better overall (2009 Maximas). Besides, the Camry was made to go against the Altima. Maxima is in another whole class with the TLs.
Don't say that looks outdated lol.

+1 Camry is in the same class with Altima.
Avalon is in the same class with Maxima.

Sorry Peach but those are pics of the 2009s. The 2008 that the OP was talking about getting is the previous model and doesn't look nearly as good as the newer Gen6 Camrys (and especially compared to the SEs).
HOWEVER, I own the 2005 Maxima and the 2008 Camry. They are very much comparable. Looks are obvious. Driving the two is a different experience. The Maxima drives much more like a sports car. You feel more of the road in the Maxima. The Camry has more of a touring (floating) feel. Having said that, the power of the two cars are very, very close. The only way I can really tell the difference is the feel mentioned above and how the transmissions perform. The Maxima shifts very straight forward and traditional. The Camry with the 6-speed is smoother, but much more active. Its as if Toyota designed the Camry V6 to steal a few luxury sedan customers.
As far as quality, the Maxima is 3 years old and everything works and is in place! The verdict is out on the Camry, but I have notice small signs of shabby construction on the inside of the car, specifically the sun visor will come right out of the roof of the car all to easy. The visor only clips in. This is a sign that Toyota has surely begun to find areas to save money recently. If I had to choose, I would buy Camry V6. You will definitely got more car for the money and I suspect it to be around a $5,000 or more difference.
Across the board, people that have rode in both my cars come the same conclusion about the outright differences.

That doesn't look like the Maximas I've seen for sale around here. It's not on Nissan.com or Edmunds.com either. Must be the 2009 model. When they do come out and you get all the stuff in that photo it's going to be more then my Camry. I paid less then 25k out the door for an 09 Camry LE with moonroof, V6, and alloy wheels. I'll bet the Maximas they will have on the lot will start over 30k.
i'd take an 08 maxima over an 09. the headlights of those 09 maximas are seriously fucked.
i like the aggressiveness of the older 08, the stock 18" wheels, the flowing body curves. it seems a lot peppier than the avalon too.
I disagree on the comparison: camry - Altima, Avalon - maxima.
Until the 08 model year, the maxima is basically a more touring tuned, bit more luxury altima - same chassis, engines, drivetrain etc. Not sure if that will change for the 09 model.
The interior picture of the 09 do look very nice - they adapted some features of their lux brand G35 sedan features. I like that.

I can understand having the same engines and drivetrains, but the same chassis. Wouldn't that be considered one model if it were the same chassis?
