5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
We have a V6 Gas Mileage Thread, might as well have one for the I4.
I got about 27 MPG Highway, drove from LA to Sacramento (approximately 350 mi) nonstop, no gas fill-ups in between, only used about 13 gallons. I think that's not bad at all.
I drove fast (80-90 mph), since that's about 7 hrs driving.
with never turning off the ac and not worring about gas milage i get 27-29 around here

Uh....that sucks ass. I can get 34-35 from 29 Palms to SF. 530 miles no fill up. I'm 90% certain I can get to 600 mi w/o filling up, but I'm afraid to strand myself.
Mixed, I get about 30 MPG

How come I don't see these numbers? I don't have that much of a leadfoot and I do mix of city/hwy more hwy. hehe.
Prolly because 101 and 280 suck ass until you get out of SF...and Hwy 1 doesn't really count as freeway until you get to about John Daly or to Marin County. 280 isn't as bad usually in the city but 101 is just horrid.
Plus in SF, you basically can never go more than 1000ft without stopping. That's why it takes like 30 min to 5 miles.
Also all the dumbfucks on Sunset Blvd can't figure out that the lights are timed so you can never go a consistent speed. I can never stay in 5th more than past 1 or 2 lights. If you go 70 or so every light is green though.
The lights on 19th Ave are just straight up fucked because they're timed so they turn red as you get there. Stopping every 500 ft for 2-3 miles doesn't help things at all. Wonder if that's why so many people get hit by cars there...people always trying to make the light because the timing is so fucked up. Also the speed limit is lower than it was a few years ago so I can't use 5th which probably doesn't help either. Yer....1000rpm in 5th....not unless i'm going down hill with a tail wind or just coasting. I can floor it and nothing will happen at those speeds - just lots of noise.

Thinking of getting the 16 inch alloy wheels. Since that it more weight on the car, will that affect gas mileage by much? I have have an I4 model 07 camry.

I think that blocking off my lower grille helped me to get the fuel mileage that I got on my last tank. My fuel mileage was better than ever before under the circumstances that I was driving. I had to pass many cars on two lane roads and idled a lot too. I'm sure that if I drove normally and slowed down, I could easily achieve well over 30 MPG.
I usually get about 25.5 mpg in the city and about 35-36 mpg on the interstate. But like njerald stated above the reading in the xle dash is off by about 1.5mpg. So I am really getting about 24 mpg in the city and 34.5- 35 mpg on the interstate. I have had my 07xle I4 for a little over a year with 24,890 miles. So I think I am doing pretty good. Any suggestions on new tires that have a life spand longer than the bridgestones that came on the car (215/60 16).

Alloy wheels would improve mileage slightly, don't expect more than 1-2 MPG AT BEST because it would reduce weight.
If the wheels are $750 shipped, you drive 15000 miles per year, you go from 32 to 33 MPG, and fuel costs $4.50, it will take you 11.7 years to break even.
There are easier and less expensive ways to improve MPG.

You must have stopped several times and took naps in between!
It takes me AT MOST 5.25 hours to go from Sac to La at cruising speeds of 75-80 mph.
