Hijack thread! My wife had the 60,000 miles service preformed on her 2000 Celica, in which the tranny fluid and filter was replaced. The Celica now has 132,xxx on the odometer. If I replace the fluid and filter now, would I be setting myself up for problems with the transmission?
WS is considered to be lifetime fill under all service conditions. According to a service bulletin, it is supposed to be inspected every 100,000 miles, but it does not require replacement or flushing at all.
I don't have access to Mitchell OnDemand at this computer, but I read that from the TSB that was available on Mitchell.
The WS fluid is checked by comparing its color against a chart every 30K miles.
The trans is very sensitive to quantity, needs to be checked within a certain temp range. The trans case has a fill port similar to a manual trans. After the trans is overfilled, the fluid is brought to temp then excess drained out.

Automatic transmission fluid color is a very poor indicator of the fluid's condition for numerous reasons. First, many transmissions use friction materials that use carbon fiber materials. These materials will cause fluid discoloration very quickly and this does not mean the fluid needs to be replaced. In fact, GM issued a service bulletin for the Pontiac Vibe w/the A246E that used T-IV fluid to address this issue specifically. Second, the newer transmission fluids may contain more dispersants than their predecessors. As a result, they will suspend more contaminants; a color change usually indicates that the fluid is doing its job. Lastly, the color charts you see from various aftermarket sources are more of a marketing effort to get you to change your fluid more often. They cite heat as the primary cause of transmission and transmission fluid failure. Unfortunately, this has changed significantly over the last few years as base oils have improved tremendously. Now, the main cause of fluid failure is not heat, but failure of the friction system.
I do not trust my manual either. I change my engine oil every 500 miles or every 2 weeks, whichever comes first. And I also put jet fuel instead of 87 because I ONLY want THE BEST for my baby.

Hahaah and don't forget to change your wiper blade inserts after each rainy day, too!

Thats engine abuse should be changed twicei n between fillups!!! if you dont your motor is almost certain to explode and hurl you hundreds of feet from the car
Awesome, I will start doing oil changes every 500 miles and maybe do the tranny every 1000. I guess the coolant should also be done every....weekend so the engine starts the week with fresh coolant....
Seriously I have had many cars.....and I know that the fluid and strainer will be prety full of shavings .
