Is anybody else having this problem? I have a 2003 Toyota Camry LE with only 55,000 miles on it and my engine is starting to jump while its in park and while I am breaking at a stop light. Somebody said that it could be my RPM that needs to be readjusted but when I went to the dealership to ask them if that is possible they said that I would have to replace me computer chip which would cost a crap load . This is my first car that I bought so I don't want to be out and loose the money that I put into this car. If anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.
How high is the engine jumping? Does it have good hang time?
Seriously though, We need to know if its a 4 or 6 cylinder, Describe the problem better than saying "jumping" does it do it hot or cold? Do you maintain the car properly? etc...

I've noticed this ever so slightly with my car - I'm waiting at a stop light and the RPMs go up just a tiny bit. If my foot is only on the brake lightly, the car will go about an inch forward. This only happens with the A/C on so I've come to the conclusion that it's the compressor cycling on and off. I have not noticed this in the other two Toyotas that I drive but they're also V6; mine is an I4. Guess the I4 doesn't have enough power to spare..ha ha!
That said, it's never been a real problem and seems to have all but gone away after my last oil and transmission fluid change in the last two months. Not sure how that could have an effect, I'm just stating what I've experienced.

Your description is vague but if your engine "jump" is minor its probably normal like they are all saying. Especially if the idle jumps then quickly returns to normal. If it is not minor, and what you are saying is that you can feel too much engine movement OR rough idle, try to narrow down the problem. An engine in perfect shape with good idle will still jump if an engine mount is broken. So have your engine mounts checked.
If its rough engine idle then thats another seperate problem. Like the one the other people are talking about above. You could have either or both problems so i'd find out what partss involved before throwing money at it.
To the OP - how much are your RPMs going up by? Mine only rev up maybe 150 RPMs max when the compressor kicks in. Most times I can't feel it at all. If it's more than that, perhaps someone else can chime in with what that could be..

Yeah, it's probably just the engine idling up when the compressor kicks in. An annoyance maybe but nothing to be concerned about.
Or an easy fix is to turn off the AC. If you want to see that jump is cause by the AC than turn it back on and the "jump" should start almost right away.
If you give the dealer enough trouble I'm sure some guy will just remove the AC and say "Problem solved"
sorry if i was not clear on my problem. basically when i start my car up, yes my rpm will start jumping when i am not pressing the gas and while i am at a red light or stop sign. as well, i noticed to day, that when i am driving and if i have my ac turned on and i am at a red light for a while my car will just cut off on me and i have to restart my car and turn off the ac. someone told me that it could be my idle air control that might need to be replaced. but i am not sure what to do. i am going to take it to the dealership tomorrow and see if they can take a look at it and tell me what is going on with it. if anyone else can help please do.

I'd try cleaning it myself first before emptying my ban kaccount at the dealership. But if you do it'll cost you ($3.00 for a can of cleaner.). Nothing to lose. How to: Cleaning Throttle Body, Pictorial
