I am very interested in buying the smoked taillights below. The auction claims that the smoked lights are "street legal" but I'm trying to figure out if these lights would be fully legal to use in California. My understanding what that smokes lights are illegal, but I could be wrong.
You shouldn't have anything to worry about in terms of being "street legal". If a cop's gonna pull you over because of your LED tail lights he (or she) has way too much time on their hands, or they're just assholes IMHO.
I saw someone selling their smoked LED tail lights for $150.00. They claimed they never put them on.
Someone here put it on their car. I think it was Tobeit? I dont remember..its posted on one of the LED threads. I've seen Scions, VW Golf/Jettas with dark almost black taillights. This doesnt even come close to that and they're still driving around with them on.
Cheapest you can get them brand new is about $222. One of the ebay sellers is selling it for $277 including free shipping. Use live.com cashback and you can get up to 20% off. Thats about $55.40 off! Total cost after 60 days is $222. You have to wait 60 days to get the $55.40 sent to you.

I bought a set a couple of days ago. I used a 10% off eBay coupon. It covered the cost of shipping. If you wait a week or so I'll post some pics.
Should of waited instead of going for the 10%. The % was fluctuating up and down. One day it will be 10%, next it will be 20% and back down again.
It was 20% yesterday and it seems to be 17% now. Will it go up or down? No one knows. Its the waiting game. I'm waiting for 25%. I'll settle with 20% again.
As dcemureviews stated...I have them on . No problem with cops, if they ask point them to the fact that they are DOT approved and have the DOT stamp.
Good luck - I am really happy that I decided for the smoked version. You can see more pic's on my CD page.
Is it stamped on the backside of the light? If so, you think the cop will wait? He'll write the ticket and drive off. Of course, you can go to court, appeal it but its just wasting your time.
I wonder how the smoked would look on Barcelona Red. I guess I'm not the one to make that call. I thought the smoked lights looked awful until I saw them on Tobeit's car.
PS - I know where you can get a great deal on a set of the red LED tails.

That is how it is with almost any approved aftermarket part. The officer would need to tell you why he writes a ticket (if you state it is DOT approved he needs to notice that and make the claim he does not believe you). I doubt they do that - they only write tickets if they are certain their is a violation (like not just lightly smoked tails but pure black headlights). You can show that when the lights are on the colors are what they are supposed to be: white for reverse and red for tail and brake lights, yellow for signal lights. The latter will convince them that these are legal.
Thanks everyone. The seller states that the lights are DOT approved and therefore should have the DOT stamp on it. Hopefully (if I can afford it) I will order a set tonight!
It didnt seem that hard to do. Break the clip on the taillight, remove and replace. If you dont want to break the clip, loosen bumper, remove and replace.
