Can't balance wheels on 2007 Camry?

I replaced the stock 17" wheels (17"x7", +45 offset, 5-114.3) that came on my '07 Camry SE with a set of 17" Lexus GS "take-off" wheels (made by Toyota)from lexus-parts.com (17 x 7.5 inches, 5-114.3, et- 35 mm, 27.35 lbs). I re-used the Toyo Proxes 215/55/17 tires. The independent shop that normally balances these same wheels on my '06 Lexus GS300 with NO PROBLEM says he can't balance these wheels! He's tried 3 times and they still cause the steering wheel of my Camry to shimmy between 70-80 mph. I didn't actually speak to him, but my wife said he told her they needed a "static" balance. They did swap the TPM's from my stock wheels to these wheels, but my GS300's wheels have these as well, although maybe a different model. Any idea what I need to ask a tire shop in order to find out if they have what it takes to balance these wheels/tires?

THANKS!

Find out if they only do Dynamic balance, or if they have a balancer capable of Static balancing

I have the same vibration issue on my Camry with stock proxies. Please let me know what you did to fix the vibration issue.

Are you sure it is the tires/rims and not the bearings, hubs, etc?

Good point. Are you using Hub Centric rings?

If you had the issue from the beginning check out T-SB 0106-08 "Steering Wheel Flutter/Body Vibration" It involves replacing both front hubs.

agreed with above postings...make sure to check TSB 0106-08 on the hubs....also, make sure the shop is doing both a static and dynamic balence to relieve both shimmy and wheel tramp....most newer balencers have a road force balence setting that simulates the pressure of the vehice on the road to give accurate balence readings, and a smartweight setting to balence the wheels with minimum weight....id take it to the dealer and make sure the wheels are balenced properly, the runout on the hubs is correct, and the wheels are torqued to spec with the correct star pattern torquing process....there are alot of small things that have a huge effect on wheel balence...another issue sometimes is that the tire isnt phase matched with the wheel, which creates a heavily unbalenced wheel/tire which requires too much wheel weight to balence properly....personally, id take it to your toyota dealer to make sure the TSB isnt the root cause, and then go from there
good luck!

I had a shimmy at 60 to 65mph with my 20's when I first got my car. They were a dealer installed option so the fixed it under waranty. Here's what they did. 1st they used 4 different hunter road force balancing machines and balanced my wheels 6 times. Still had some shimmy. The finally installed these new type of weights and they solved the problems.

They were brand new at the time. Now it looks like they are using them all the time. Toyota are knows to be finicky with aftermarket wheels. Maybe you shop can get these in.
