steering wheel audio controls

Have 2005 camry with steering wheel audio controls not working, dealer says needs to buy entire unit cost $144.00 and $98.00 to install. I know I can install myself cause I've open it up before, but what I want to know if there is an interface hooked up somewhere inside and may be the problem. This is factory controls so I don't know if interface is only for aftermarket addons audio controls. Any body has any ideas.

Do you have stock head unit or aftermarket?

If the controls dont work man, start with the basics....

Take out your headunit, and check the harness in the back of the HU. Make sure everything is attached properly. Make sure there are no snipped or loose wires. If everything looks fine, take out the actual steering controls themself and check those connections...

If it looks fine, then get a new one.

Sorry I am not much help, I don't know too much about the 05'.
