5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
A friend of mine told me I should change the oil on my Camry at 1,500 miles. He said that the engine breaks in and more debris is in the oil at this time. I know Toyota says 5,000 miles, but what does Toyota Nation think?
Is this a waste of money or worth the $35 to change at 1,500 miles.

Don't they include the first oil change free? Mine was and I got it change around this time too. To me, it's worth it since waiting for 3K is like taking a risk. But after that, 3K/oil change should be OK. Only my last 2 oil change that I changed to synthetic for longer mileage since I hate changing oil. (I do it myself)

You're going to get informed positions on both sides of the aisle on this one. New engines are bench tested and don't need break in...
It's a waste of money...
My opinion is to change the oil yourself at 500 to 1500 miles, 3000, 5000 and then every 5000.
But that's me. It's your money.
Everything I've read and heard from mechanics tells me that your first oil change should be at around 1000 miles. When the engine breaks in, it will leave lots of small metal shavings in the oil. You'll want to get them out for somewhat obvious reasons.
I was under the impression that 5+ years ago and older cars were suggested to have their first oil change between 1500-2000 miles. I think that because of more stringent break-in tests for engines now, before the engine is put into a vehicle, that there may be less need for an early oil change.
Personally, I waited until 3k for my first oil change and every subsequent one is done at 4k.

Dealership is doing it for free at 1,700. I will change it again at 5,000 miles. Makes sense about the crap being in the engine after so many miles.
