Seriously, this is 21st Century. If you know how to use a computer and search the web, you know how a forums works. If you dont know how a forums works, you shouldnt be on a computer.
People are just too damn lazy to do their own search so they think people will hand feed them every information. Isnt that what google is also for? Isnt that what the SEARCH feature put in place for? The SEARCH button is there for a reason....use it.
Telling noobies to search isn't being hostile especially for info that is in their owners manual or threads that repeat every week.
How do I turn the maintenance light off, what tire pressure should I use, How much oil, what light bulbs, why does my AC recirc come on, etc....
How the Hell will they ever learn?
I don't tell them that if I know the info/question hasn't been covered in the last 2 1/2 years.
and some noobies don't ask, they demand an answer. They are the last people I will waste a minute on.
Some respondents always give answers like: I think, maybe, as I remember, it might be; which is the wrong info because they have no idea what the real answer is................
searching through this forum to find threads where the main response is telling the OP to use the search function.
That being said I think some of you guys shouldn't be too hostile towards new members. Not everyone is famillar with how a forum works.
Well said.
There's certainly no need for unprovoked hostility. Fortunately, most forumites are good judges as to when to recommend the manual and searching, and when to supply answers.

Telling people to use the SEARCH feature is not being mean or rude. Its the start of pointing the person to the right direction and way to find answer on their own. When someone posts a new thread asking the same question that was asked 10 times already, this just clutters the board. When someone does use that SEARCH function that is provided on ALL forums, not only do you find your answer but you get 10 different threads cuz people dont actually search before asking. If they cant find the answers, bump an old thread that is similar to their topic.
Hell, even the stickied threads at the very top of the forums even tell people to SEARCH. Theres a thread SPECIFICALLY for newbies to read FIRST. If people cant read that, than they have problems.
The amount of time that it takes to make a new pointless thread, waiting for a response from someone, they could of used the SEARCH function and found it themselves. Than you have those that ask a question and come back 20 mins later or the next day and have the balls to say "anyone? 50 views and no answers?" Uhhhh...yea, cuz its been asked many times. The 20 mins or 24 hours you were waiting for a reply, you could of found it by searching the forums.

I agreed on the principal of help them to fish, not just give them a fish.....
but it is how you said/write will carry your tone of voice. It's all about people skills.

I think it's just the fact that the amt of threads being created even if a search is done for information now,
to find the information someone would need, they would hafta go through a bunch of threads that say search.

Believe it or not, there are still people who are not that good with a computer. And when new people post, they are reaching out to make a connection with other TN members. And yes, there are a few very rude people with high post#'s.

The above states that this is a discussion forum, so when new members ask that first question, be kind and don't yell & scream with oversize fonts. The people running this site and looking for people to upgrade their membership will be happy if rude poster don't run off new members.

But the amount of time someone spends waiting for a reply, they could of read all those threads and gotten their answers. It would be quicker to find answers, if people didnt make a new thread for each question that popped into their head before searching.
For instance, I'm looking for info on oil filters/changes. Instead of me having to make a new thread asking which is the correct one, where to get, what is the best brand and how to do it, I'm searching. Granted there are like 17 pages but only about 1-2 full pages pertains to what I need to know. By skimming and reading through titles of threads and actual threads, I'll find my answers and more that I didnt even think of searching.
I didnt even know there was a wrench available to remove the filter easier. But I found this while searching. Same goes for instructions on how to do it (05-06 Avalon PDF).
You can tell someone to use the search field but do so with tact.
