Unhappy speedometer/milage???

hey guys sorry if this thread was posted before... but ive done the search and didnt get anything on it... so im posting a new thread...

i just replaced the speedometer on my 03 camry, because i screwed it up(dont ask)...anyway, before i replaced it the milage read 89something and when i put the new one in the milage read 73something...

whats the deal? doesnt the computer in the car keep all that info? so that if you ever replace or break something it would give back the same info as before...???

im happy yet frustraded at the same time... happy because my milage isnt as bad as i thought it was and frustraded because im not sure if the reading is right or wrong?

I'm sure you know the distance to your work.. so drive there and see if the trip # is saying correctly.

Or you could use a GPS unit to measure distance to and from somewhere as well as measure speed.

Did you install a new speedo head from the dealer or something from the junk yard?

Then the mileage is stored in an eeprom/similar in the speedo head assembly, and reflects the mileage of the car from which the head came.

Better hope you have not taken the car anywhere for repairs, or inspections, cuz if you go back before you reach what the mileage was, Carfax will show possible odometer fraud....

R U saying they know exactly where you go and know the exact distance?

So I bought my car new and ODO was 100. I put 50K on the ODO and replace this head and now it's 40K....... Carfax can show that my car suppose to be 50K? How? I never take it into the dealer for oil change. So how can they know?

Yes.. by buying a new car with lower ODO. I think it's illegal to reset it and this digital one is made so you can't do it at all.

i think what he means to say is that if i took it in when it had 50 some odds miles and than brought it back and now its got 40 some odds miles than they would know... but i do think that they would beabel to do a test that would get the actual milage...

but i guess ill have to talk to the dealership and see what they have to say or can do....
