5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Drove with 4 people yesterday. From a complete stop, Had to make a left & merge quickly.
Hit the gas and the car just didn't want to move!! Almost left like the trans was slipping! I have never had any problems, touching 70K. Have already seaformed it 10K miles ago. Also changed trans fluid (yes I used the proper yota type-IV)
I was wondering if something could be wrong. Is there any updated software for the ECU? (how do I check? and if yes, how much $ do dealers charge?)
Also with just 4 people, the low hanging exhaust tends to hit speed bumps!
ive had a total of 5 people in my car and it was the same way which is a small reason why i hate driving with passengers its like the weight differance puts too much stress for it to go
Weight on a vehicle completely changes it's dynamics especially acceleration and breaking. 4 people does sound like a reasonable number but it could be 4 heavy people
In high school I used to have a mercury mystique and I use to seat up to 7 people (including me) into my car. Every time I did that I had to be extra careful with the brakes. All that weight added at least 4 to 5 meters to the normal stopping distance. The acceleration use to suffer also even though it was a 2.5 V6.
Did you test it afterwards when you had no one else sitting in the car?
had 5 in my car friday...in the back 3 kids, 15, 11, 10..and my aunt in the front. and my V6 felt sluggish..probably how an I4 would feel with just a driver in the car but it did have a lot of pick up and go when i needed to pass

well... at least it's better than having the transmission actually slip/fail due to the amount of people.
yup. happened to me in my old es300 coming from a stop going uphill. engine just revved and we didn't go anywhere. on top of that, the car just gave up and stalled.
when i got 4 people in my car i can feel the lag but it's not like OMG this sucks....i mean maybe i just know what to expect since im not trying to race or anything its decent power and looks good. thats what i like about mine :P plus its toyota.

Right on. I haul a total of 4 golfers w/golf bags in the city and on the highway. Riders are amazed at the power with a full car and still great mileage.

It is slower but no way Geo Metro sluggish.
Agreed. In Cuba several years ago I had the "pleasure" of "operating" a Hyundai Atos with a 1.1L 4-banger engine making 60 horsepower. There were a total of 5 people in the car. I don't I need to explain the how the thing performed.
Basically at any gradient, you'd have to shift down to 3rd and the car would simply slow down.
Not to mention the various Soviet-era cars that I've been in. For instance a Moskvitch from the late 1970s, a 1980s Lada, a Trabant!
My father was the proud owner of a 1971 Moskvitch 407 which was passed down by my grandpa. It used to be white, but by the time I was born it was orange because too much rust developed on the doors. This is exactly the car from my childhood:
1.4L 4-banger making 48 horsepower paired to a 4 speed manual. In this car, either the radio worked, or the engine, but not both. And the turn signal stalk often ended up in your hand even after you were done with it.
