5W-30 for 09 Camry?

I took my 09 Camry into the dealership today for an oil change. I'm at 2560 miles, I wanted to get an extra oil change in before the first scheduled maintenance. Afterwards, on my receipt I noticed they used 5W-30 oil, instead of 0W-20 or 5W-20 as recommended by Toyota. I asked the service adviser about this, he said they use 5W-30 as a common grade for multiple vehicles, have never had issues using this grade for Camrys, and that it's basically the same oil. They use Quaker State Synthetic Blend. Is this anything I should be concerned about?

On the plus side, they gave me no hassle about applying TSB-0068-08 after I stated hard shifting. The car feels a little more responsive on acceleration, especially after cornering. It's probably just placebo effect but I'm glad that I got it done.

It won't hurt anything.

I would recommend that you bring your own oil from now on. 0W20 or 5W20 will actually make your engine more efficient.

What dealer did you go to?

if you have V6 check your owner manual again, it stated 5W-30 should be use, and I believe 0W-20 and 5W-20 is suggested for i4. But 5W-30 work just fine on either engine, don't sweat it.

I have the i4. I was thinking about taking my own oil next time, should I go with full synthetic? Also, is there any advantage to 0W-20 vs. 5W-20?

My dealer is Rick Hendrick in Fayetteville, NC.

Toyota released a TSB that stated 5W-20 was the preferred oil for its engines.

I would question the dealer and ask for another oil change for free.

Why should you have to pay for any extra gas consumption for the next 5,000 miles?????????

My plan is to take in my own 5W-20 for the next scheduled maintenance, 2440 miles from now. However, is the difference in gas consumption substantial enough that I should make a fuss about it now with the dealer?

Two-Three gallons over 12-15 fillups (~5,000 miles) is significant to me.

Maybe meaningless to you.

The bottom line - They didn't do what they were supposed to..............

Last time when I tried 5W-20 on my wife's 05 SE V6, the old oil pour out like running water when I changed it at around 3000 miles, the engine noise was slightly louder with the 5W-20 oil as well, no way in hell I would ever use it for our car again. I don't care what toyota recommended or says, IMO 5W-20 and 0W-20 is way too thin to be effectively protecting the engine in the summer heat. There are some researchs out there who had conducted fuel efficiency test on 5W-20 vs 5W-30 and the result was very disappointing, like less than 1% gain in mpg LOL BITOG forum is the best place to ask oil related question. Personally I am going to stick with 5W-30 be it V6 or i4

How an oil drains is meaningless. Engine clearances and the correct oil viscosity/weight mean everything.

The OP should use the correct _W20 weight oil, because that's what his vehicle calls for.

in the late 90s folks went with the OCI recommended by Toyota and look what happened....major oil sludge problem, just because Toyota say so does not mean they're always right, you guys do what you want with your car and use whatever you like. As i said, personally, me, myself...is going to use 5W-30 no matter what toyota recommended.

Well, that's what irks me about this. Everything I buy/do for my car is good quality, no expense spared, and then I take it to a Toyota dealership for an oil change and they throw in some bulk oil of the wrong weight just to save a few pennies.
