Horn and Cruise don't work... HELP

It's an 02 Camry 4 cyl automatic. All fuses are good underhood and underdash. There has been a squealing from the steering wheel for about a year now whenever you turn it. I'm thinking that since the cruise, airbag, and horn are all circuits on the actual steering wheel itself, that there has to be a connection between all 3 of them. Oh yea, the air bag light is on too.

Anyway, I think that for the circuity to be completed to these 3 systems, there has to be some sort of device that makes continuous electrical contact when the steering wheel is being turned. Maybe kinda like the brushes in an alternator. What do you think?

Signals go thru what Toyota calls the "Clockspring and Sensor steering position" below the steering wheel.....

It sounds like you have a broken clock spring. They aren't like brushes in an alternator, but like a spring in a clock. As you turn the steering wheel it winds up, and unwinds as the steering wheels is turned back the other way.

What code do you have?

Yep, Broken clockspring.

Not cheap either, $250 for a US built camry, and $540 for a Japan built Camry. Takes about an hour to install

TRD vvti, I don't know how to retrieve trouble codes. Doesn't that require an obd2 scanner?

JSM1284, is there a way I can tell by the vin# if mine is US or Japan built?

EDIT: and if it takes about an hour for you (an ase master tech) to install, I'm gonna figure on 3 times that for me. LOL... Oh hey, one question, would disconecting the negative battery cable disable the airbag from deploying? What other precautions should I also take?

Gen5

Advance Auto parts or AutoZone can hook it up to the scanner for you and read the codes.

Have you checked the "Newbies please read before posting!" sticky at the top of the forum yet? There is a link to the online manual there.

Check out the link and post any other questions you have AFTER you've checked it out.

Good luck.
