Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
First off, I want to start out by saying hi, I'm new. Now that that's out of the way I NEED YOUR HELP! Well, I love cars, but don't know much about them. I have an 07' black camry le 4 cyl and I am buying rims. I already put the down payment on them, but I am scared to buy 20" rims because my friend, who had a 99' civic had 20s and she could hardly drive it. Well the rims I am gettin are Hipnotic C-note in either 18" or 20". I am a dj so I have a lot of heavy equipment in my car at all times. My friends also love to pile in my car at an illegal amount of passengers. So, what I wanted to know is should I get the 18" or 20" rims? I want the 20s because they look nice and I always wanted 20s but I don't want to sacrifice my car, rubbing, overall ride and annoyance etc. Also, I drive my car a lot. A lot of long distance driving and I love to snowboard. I would never take the rims off since I live in an apt I cant stash the other rims that came with the car anywhere! PLEASE HELP!! What should I do?
Also, with the 20s will it be hard to turn? Will it make my car have a slower start up speed? etc. What will happen if i have the 20s on? Another person also told me it can mess up your transmission. Is that true?
i got 20s on my car and they dont create any problems at all, except the ride got a bit more harsh because i went with super thin tyres. its important for you to note that camry's body is MUCH bigger than 99 civic. our camrys can take on 22s if you like that 4wd look. Once, out of curiousity, I put my 20s next to my OEM stockies, and guess what the diameter of my 20s are smaller than the stockies. and IMO since you will be taking heavy loads i dont suggest lowering the car
welcome to TN. 20's would be fine but if you plan on carrying alot of people and stuff...rubbing will be your main problem. you should think about getting 19's that might be better for you.
you know, when you do get the 20s with the tires, the overall diameter of that would be the same as the overall diameter of the stock wheels. if you think you are going to rub with the 20s, then it is like you are saying you will rub with the stock wheels when people pile up into your car.
you'll be fine with 20s. if you are considering lowering your car for a bit, don't even consider using just lowering springs. get coilovers and set the dampening to the stiffest setting and it would not rub. like indomi said, 99 civics were not made for 20s. it looks stupid even with 18s on.
on the other hand, if you are doing snowboarding and consider on driving your car up to the mountains, the best bet you have is to get a set of 18s with good all seasons like pirelli p-zero nero m+s. the added weight of the 20s will make it harder to climb up a mountain.
Thanks everyone for your help. I really appreciate it. If anyone else has anything else to contribute, please do so. Other than that, I went with the 20s just because you guys said it won't be too bad and hopefully I won't have to drive it up the mountain . . . if so G-d be with me!! lol Maybe I'll just steal my mom's caddy and hopefully she wont realize right?

...I met someone just yesterday who has 22" on an I4 CE. She said she likes the ride quality - called it smooth. I ask her I want to take a ride to test that.

I will see if I can make a photo of her car next time ...silver, with smoked tails, 22" crome, HID, custom 2-tone leather interior, custom sound with Nav, Infinity speakers...but no lowering kit though .
