5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I posted this in the detailing and car care section but got no response, so i figured i'll try my luck here.
Hi All. Any one familiar with V-Kool glass coating films? Is it any good? It gets really hot here and window tinting of any sort is illegal. V-Kool recently introduced in Kuwait and has been doing well. Its clear film so there are no legal issues. It is quite expensive though so I wanted to be sure of its capabilities before I spent the money.
WHOA SUNNOVA......50C
That's insane! i grew up in a 40C temps 90% of the year, but it sure won't compare to 50C
back where i grew up there were no laws about tinting and to keep cool year round, my family had double limo tints an all our cars. it helped quite a bit during daytime, but driving around at night makes you feel like you are driving alone in the road!
Leave the window open a bit also help by a few degree. Also those cheap sheet to put on the windshield reduce the temp too. Currently this is my solution.
Call for 95F here today. My car is staying cool with that shield on the windshield and 5 windows open a little (5th is the moonroof). Hope it won't rain else I have to run out to close the windows.
I guess nobody has experience here with V-cool in the US. But how is the camry holding up at that brutal heat - like dash warp, any cracking or squeeking....my doors squeek when the temp goes above 100F. Also at 50C you probably lost some of your 268 HP as well....might not be your main concern.
the car's holding up pretty well in the heat. IMO Dash warp and cracking happens after years of exposure. I use all sorts of sun shades (back, side front...) when I park the car but its while the the car is moving and especially stuck in traffic that the heat takes it toll. Its not 50 C everyday...hottest for this time of year is around 45-47C during peak noon which is still quite hot!!
Tobeit...my car's left rear door has been squeaking on and off for the past few days. I wasn't able to figure out why it was doing that and was thinking of taking the car to the dealer...but now that you've mentioned it...the heat might explain it
Luckily the Grande trim comes with a power read sun shade operated at press of a button!! Look at bottom pic closely
Hey, nice car! Good to see you guys use kilometers per hour in the desert. I've never been a fan of the whole miles per hour thing. It's such a non-standard distance. A mile is too long!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I saw this and just had to chime in.
V-Kool 70 is nearly invisible (transmits 70% of light) and rejects about 55% of heat. It's also extremely expensive, but it does it's job extremely well. In the US to get a car done in VK-70 usually costs about $700 to $800.
Now there are several other products out on the market today that have similar heat rejection, but no where near the quality. Not to mention VK-70 has the best heat rejection and is dye free! Others use an infra-red absorbing dye (usually located in the scratch resistant coating of all places....so if you scratch it you can see it) which can fade. V-Kool gets it's heat rejection through complex atomic stackings of silver, so it's dye free and won't fade or turn purple. Very high tech (it's made on the same machine that puts the radar evasion coating on the stealth bomber windshields).
It's not very popular on cars because of the extreme price, but is very popular on houses. When people want great heat rejection and fade protection without changing the appearance of their house (or car) they go with VK-70.
Now it's buyer beware though. There is a VK-75 and VK-65 which look nearly identical, but have less heat rejection, and are cheaper. So you have to make sure the place installing it can be trusted to give you what you pay for. However, it's rare to find someone that is both shady and carrying a top notch product like V-Kool.
The only problem is, since it contains metal (Ag) it's not signal safe. So it can ruin am/fm reception on glass embedded radio antennas, interfere with GPS signals, cell phone reception, some tire pressure monitoring system, some keyless entry systems, etc. But performance wise, there is none better.
