Gen5 axle nut size

Hey guys, I did some searching but didn't find anything on gen5+
Does anyone know what size is the original axle nut? It's a 12point but I couldn't figure it out, tried finding it at sears but all were too small.
My guess is either 32 or 34 but I know older ones were 30 apparently. Anyone tried this before?

PS I'm doing an axle replacement, I have a feeling it was something wrong since the start since I had noises but the mechanics never told me what it was outright until now its 45K miles, getting worse and warranty's gone, go figure.

I guess that taking a metric ruler to the axle, matching it up to opposing flats and determining the distance isn't possible? Surely you can find a way to measure the nut size without removing it from the car. Just too easy.

thanks njerald,
I have a feeling mine will be 30mm. I forgot one detail when I was thinking about the 12 point one, I think that's only the cap or cover nut whatever they call it and the actual one will be behind it...Hopefully I get a chance to get this done soon. I don't like 9-5 work :-(
