Accessing Cabin Air Filter - 2007 Camry

I have tried to access the Cabin Air Filter in my 2007 Camry and have been unable to move the glove box out of the way.

I really want to be able to examine the filter without having to make a trip to the dealership.

I have tried to follow the directions in my manual and have been unable to successfully "disengage the claws" mentioned in step 2. Am I just not pushing hard enough on the back side of the glove box (for fear of breaking something?)

I really can't add anything that isn't in the manual. It's as easy as it explains it to be.

Why respond if you can't "add" anything other than to be a sarcastic dick?

First disengage the damper unit on the far right bottom side of the glove compartment. Then push in carefully on both top sides of the compartment. They will deflect approx 1/2 inch. Now the pointed ends can come out of round side openings. While pushing in, try to pull foreward. This will disengage the claws that hold bottom rail in. Now you will have the entire unit in your lap. Not a very technical explanation but it works. This exposes the opening of the filter which has a cover clipped to it. Btw:We assume no responsibility for possible damage of any kind to vehicle or persons when doing this. Be careful and good luck!

I did finally get the glove box moved out of the way. It did require more force than I was really comfortable applying in order to "disengage the claws."

I was holding back because I had been told by both the sales rep and a service advisor to just bring it in to them when it was time to change the filter so they could do it.

They both indicated that some people were actually breaking something when they tried to do this ... so I was especially cautious.

This may sound dumb but what does the damper unit actually do? Is it a necessity?

Dealerships say that kind of stuff to people (especially those people they believe to not be mechanically inclined) so that they can charge $50 to change the filter.

When I do mine I just squeeze the top so the box hinges out, I never snap off the hinges to the entire box comes out.

easiest way with out removing glove box..

all you have to do is open the glove box normally and you can see the cabin air filter holder.. push the two clip tabs and pull out the cover.. next pull out the cabin filter and put the new one in.. put the cover back .. close the glove box and youre done.

I must have small hands too. Did it like that too. But I think a few of the leaves fell into the bottom when I remove my filter. The leaves and all the dirt are on the top part of the filter but when you pull it out the edge of the filter's container scrabbed those leaves and when I did it I think a few did go in. Couldn't help it really. I wish they did it side way instead of top and bottom.

you can do it without removing the glove box because i didn't want to even risk damaging it or not being able to put it back.

the cap is easy to remove by the clip. just use a small key or clip to yank the filter out slightly and then just slide it out. find some little kid with small hands or something haha.

it's def doable without removing the glove box hinges.

Thanks!

Smallish hands will indeed knock out a couple of steps for this simple procedure.

Did a quick search (using dealership's free wi-fi over free starbucks coffee at that), TN just saved me some money (again).

Dealer wanted $46 installed.

This thread is pointless...

The only real problem you have replacing your cabin air filter is remembering to empty the glove compartment before you disengage everything.
