Oil Leak!

While changing my oil, and I took a look at the bottom of the transmission case and I noticed a drop of oil.

My car is an '07 Camry CE I4 manual transmission, 14k miles.

The oil seems to be coming from where the rust-colored output drive shaft comes out of the transmission, and I think it is engine oil. You can see the oil runs all the way down out from the where the drive shaft comes out of the tranny down to bottom point of the tranny. See the golden-colored drop of oil at the bottom left, below the tranny drain plug. It is a small leak, but still a leak.

I will be taking it to the dealer for repair, but I wanted more info on what they need to do and what to call the parts, etc. so I sounded intelligent.

At first, I thought the area where the leak is coming from would contain transmission oil, but the drop sure looks like engine oil? Which is it?

Thanks in advance!

The output shaft seal is leaking. It's not a big deal. They'll have to pull the axle and install a new seal. It's a very easy job for a Technician to do.

14,000 and already an oil leak? Is this is another example of cost cutting by Toyota?

Not exactly an indicator of anybody cutting corners. Anything mechanical can and will have occasional issues. A seal is a basic repair and there will always be a small percentage of them that seep.

Warranty will solve it and you can go on with life.

Thanks! Approx. how many hours for this? Do they have to do an alignment? Is it engine oil that is leaking, or tranny oil?

Labor time is probably around two hours. Plan on leaving your vehicle at the dealer for the day if they have the part in stock. An alignment will not be needed. It's transmission oil.

You were 100% correct (not that I doubted you). The only problem was it took almost 2 weeks to get the parts so they could pull the axle and replace the three seals.

After they fixed it, I put it up on the ramps and cleaned it up, because there was plenty of gear oil on the bottom of the tranny and the A arm.:ahhhh:

Mistakes happen, and I know this was not a fault of the design, rather an assembly error or a bad seal.

One other dealer complaint - I checked the torque on the lug nuts, and it was WAY too high, so I had to retorque them back to 76 ft lbs. Why is it that noone torques to spec???

Thanks again.

It does suck when there are problems securing the parts. It seems that parts guys don't care as much as the guys in the Service Department. I think that's because they don't actually have to deal with the customers.

It seems that caring and thorough Technicians are getting harder and harder to find. Many don't clean up after repairs and get the car dirty. Most times they are trying to make time. Time is money to Techs.

Many Techs don't properly torque lugnuts. They're just lazy. It's much faster and easier just to impact the lugnuts tight. They could at least use torque sticks though.

I'm glad the repair was as easy as it appeared.

Your welcome also.
