5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I test drove a '09 Camry SE V6, but was turned off by the VSC. At low speeds it wasn't very noticeable, but if I took a medium/high-speed corner or made a quick course-correction on the highway, the electronic nanny would kick-in.
Has anyone tried a V6 without VSC? Am I crazy? Should I call back the dealer and add the option again?

VSC is standard in my understanding...It can be turned off, but only until the next time you fire up the car. Annoying now, but VSC is a VERY useful feature in the winter as I found out.

If you look on Toyota's website, you'll see that VSC is an option. I realise that it would probably be a useful thing (I live in the snow belt), but I ordered an SE because I enjoy driving, and the VSC equipped SE felt... strange (hard to describe it). Car & Driver particularly hated their VSC equipped SE.
Anyway, I just wonder if anyone else has had experience with non-VSC V6 models.

Sorry, I didn't know it was an option in the USA. Here in Canada you get it whether you like it or not.

I dislike the VSC quite a bit. About a month before I purchased my car, I test drove an 07 Camry V6 XLE with VSC and it was quite annoying. Thankfully I live in an area with no snow and little rain, so a lack of VSC is not a big deal. But if you live in an area with regular snow and/or rain, the risk of losing control is much greater and the VSC would be worth a little annoyance, in my opinion.
I think that entire discussion about VSC bothering people is way overdone (some threads lately). For normal daily use, no street racing, corner sliding etc ...I can take the VSC penalty for the occasional adrenalin kick I get where I would turn it off. Having it on permanently probably saved a lot of accidents and some lives - it's all worth it to have it. VSC don't bother me a thing. If you want to have a sports car you can take on the track to kick it - buy a sports car. I used to do that with my RX-8 - now, that is way more fun than a camry w/o VSC.
I've done just fine driving without VSC up until this point, so I really don't see the need. I know it's a nice safety feature to have, but I was really turned off from it in my initial test drive. However, I'm still interested in hearing driving experiences of those without VSC/TC. I wonder if there is a negative effect of increased torque steer without VSC/TC and/or it's difficult to keep the tires connected if you've got a heavy foot. I didn't have VSC or TC on my last 2 cars ('96 Maxima and '00 Accord), but then again, those cars didn't have nearly as much power as this new Camry has. -G
Absolutely not true. The VSC/TC is very aggressive. I was accelerating from an on-ramp and the VSC/TC caused the car to weave. Also, during a quick lane-change, it kicked in and caused the car to wobble. I guess I'm old fashioned in that I don't like the car driving for me. I wish it allowed a little more slippage before kicking in, or at least had an off switch.
