5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm looking at the maintenance schedule for newer Toyotas and every 5,000 miles, it says "Install protection plan kit" and every 15,000 it says "Install protection plan kit with 44k" - what exactly is this protection plan kit?
Other 5,000 mile maintenance items it mentions:
* Change oil and filter (can do myself)
* Rotate tires (can do myself)
* Inspect brakes (can do myself)
* Check engine specs (what exactly are they checking?)
* 19-point vehicle maintenance inspection (same question, what is inspected?)
* complimentary roadside assistance (doesn't this come with a certified vehicle anyway? I have AAA regardless)
The car I'm getting in a couple of days is a certified 2007 Camry SE with 32,000 miles. I plan to make sure the dealer has already performed the 30,000 mile maintenance - is this a requirement for a 32,000 mile vehicle to earn the certification anyway?
bg 44k is a fuel system cleaner. You basically just dump it into your fuel tank. if you want to do it, i'd recommend doing it about 1-2 fuel refills before you do an oil change. And it's def. not required by Toyota. It runs about $20 online.

Ok, so as long as it won't screw up my warranty, I should be fine doing the services at the oil change interval myself. Will I have any warranty problems if I save the oil and filter receipts?

Also, is the Certified Gold coverage worth it?
i haven't heard of anyone having problems with bg 44k. but remember that it's a fuel systsem cleaner, so if your fuel system is already clean, then cleaning it again isn't going to have any change in performance. with regards to doing your own oil change, that's ok, so long as you use the right oil and filter, and do a competent job at the appropriate intervals. if, for example, you run an oil that's too thin, and your engine sludges, then Toyota might decide not to cover that. or, if you didn't tighten the oil drain screw, and it comes off, and your engine seizes due to no oil, then again, Toyota probably wouldn't cover that.

What oil is it that you can find that would be too thin for an '07 Camry? I've never heard of thin oil causing sludge.
ok, that was a bad example, since the Camry runs a low weight oil anyways. my point was that doing your own maintenance with the wrong parts may impact warranty.
