5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Just picked up an 09 XLE with the JBL radio, with CD but no Nav, and have two questions. Doesn't this radio display song title information (RDS)? I know that I am tuned to a station that transmits it as my work car displays the information.
Second question pertains to song title display when on satellite. The radio display appears to have 12 or 13 spaces to show song title letters. When a long titled tune is being played, i.e. Stairway to Heaven, all I get is "_ _ S T A I R W A Y _ T" It doesnt scroll or flash the remainder of the title. Pressing the "text" button only changes the display to the name of the channel selected. Reading the manual has not resulted in any info, though some 25 pages are dedicated to Bluetooth. It also says that CD titles will display the title by pressing the text button but nothing is mentioned for titles for radio or CD mode. Am I missing something here?
Forgive my silly followup but what in the world does RDS have to do with the Nav system? Is the JBL radio that big of a POS that it doesn't do what stock radios in other cars do?

For Gen 6 Camrys JBL non Nav Toyota took out RDS for some reason. I have a 05 Highlander LTD with JBL and no nav and it has RDS.
I have the Nav and even here Toyota really cut some features on the wrong end:
It has RDS but only shows the full RDS info when in "P" (security feature, huhu) ...in "D" it only shows anything when in the station select menue and due to the fact that their are 8 stations to select...the screen left for each station only shows abbreviated RDS info and is scrolling
So, Toyota thinks it is more secure when you keep staring at the slow scrolling text to find out who you are listening to (like a super slow reader) instead of a single glance at the entire author and title in once...someone did not do their homework.
Also, the display for the SAT is only 12 or so characters and with that I often have to guess the artist and title...
to see the rest of the title, press and hold text and that will give you the next line. You will know that more of title is available when you see you arrow on right side.
Are you sure you are talking about the NAV JBL with SAT?
He might be referring to CD mode, which will show a second line. For those of us who rip our own CD's and end up with file names like "Artist - Album - Song Title", some editing will need to occure. Even if a file edited to "Artist-Song", more than likely one will still have to press the text key to get the second line. I think this would be more hazardous than having the info automatically scroll. Perhaps it can be configured to do that, but as of yet I haven't figured that out.
