Hi all,
I posted this in the 4Runner section but they don't seem to get much foot traffic and my question is a general one anyway, so I was wondering if any of you good Camry folk have any ideas...
I recently detailed my inlaws 2000 4Runner SR5 because I'm so swell and was surprised to see the rear side chrome bumper pieces rusted right through (not the main rear bumper but the two rear side bumpers just behind the rear wheel wells). I suppose quite some time ago they bumped into things and left it and the rust took over. Here are some pics:
I got some quotes from local Toyota dealers here in Toronto and the cheapest I was quoted was $700 + tax to remove and install new ones (approx $240 each side plus labor).
The vehicle is in mint condition other than these rusted chrome side bumpers but they aren't interested in spending that much money to repair something cosmetic on an 8 year old vehicle. I was able to clean the main portions of the bumper with CLR and stainless steel cleaner, but not much I can do with sections which have been rusted right through.
Here were some of my ideas - feel free to comment or recommend something else:
(1) get a tin of chrome colored spray paint if it exists just to help cover up the eyesore - acknowledging of course that this fix won't fill the hole - just color it.
(2) Check to see if junk yards would have these parts available as it might be cheaper to get used ones.
(3) Check to see if a body shop can fill/paint a chrome bumper
I welcome any comments/suggestions on how I can inexpensively improve the look of the bumpers...
Thanks.
