5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
New I4/6 speed tranny for the Venza and Highlander:
The new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine will generate an impressive 187 horsepower at 5,800 RPM and 186 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,100 RPM on regular 87 octane fuel.
A dual exhaust manifold will help achieve exceptional low-end torque and maximize its power output. In addition to its performance output, the Highlander equipped with the new four-cylinder will be EPA-rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEVII) and is expected to be among the leaders in fuel efficiency in the gas mid-size SUV segment.
Official EPA fuel efficiency ratings will be announced closer to launch.
The new four-cylinder engine will be mated to an all-new six-speed electronically-controlled automatic overdrive transmission with intelligence (ECT-i).
The new transmission will help deliver quiet and smooth performance on par with a V6 and acceleration that is surprisingly quick for a four-cylinder.
There's still not even any hint that it might wind up in the Camry. Still remains to be seen. Venza and Highlander go for bigger bucks, and are bigger, weightier vehicles, so there is "reason" for Venza and Highlander that isn't there for Camry.
Not that it wouldn't be a great drivetrain, though -- of course!
Toyota better upgrade the V6 powertrain if they introduce a 2.7l I4 with a 6speed. If they make the I4 have near V6 performance, they that will hurt v6 sales.

I dont think the performance would be anywhere near as close as the V6.

Ah, I did jump the gun. I thought the OP said it was confirmed it was going in the Camry, now that I look again it seems like he was just speculating as well.

Disagree. V6 has more than plenty of power. If you need more power than the current V6, you need something other than a competent V6 family sedan.

Not sure Toyota would even care. Camry profits are probably similar no matter what the drivetrain. If Camry sales rise because the new I-4/6A drivetrain attracts more buyers, then I'm sure Toyota would be nice and happy.

They will be concerned more about increasing their CAFE numbers than with V6 sales.
