Thumbs down 07 Camry(I4) having troubles with manual#!!

hey TN..

i searched this site for others having problems with the I4/MT transmission and the results were close to nobody on the site were dealing with problems...

so i figured i'd start my own thread here and describe the problem i'm facing with the transmission, it nearly destroys all the fun!

first off, car is an a 07 (GL trim - second lowest trim), with 27K miles on the clock... car is my second manual and it went quite a few shift mistakes like downshifting VERY late, what your reguler manual begginer would do...

so then, i started noticing all these problems... what started as a 1-2 grind ended up 3rd gear poping out to nuetrul and finally third bieng unusable only way for me to keep it engaged is to keep a little throttle and my hand kept on the shifter to keep it in gear!

reverse is also grinding...

i can't make my 1st engage smoothley without reducing my speed to like 10 mph, second is the same only i have to reduce my speed to like 20 mph(1200 rpm in second), overall car is a LOUSY drive now...

i would like to know if it's just a synchros problem and if i can simply fix it by replacing the synchros or is it more involved then that like teeth damage...

gurus help me plz!

All manual transmissions are fairly simple and straightforward. Going into 1st gear while moving would require you to rev the engine to roughly the correct rpm to help synch the engine to the transmission. This would also be true of any other gear and speed. Synchronizers are not miracle workers. The engine needs to spinning at about the right speed. HOWEVER, you mentioned that 3rd gear jumps out. No gear should jump out and into neutral without encouragement so you might have a problem there.

If the driver is good with a manual transmission, he should be able to shift gears, once moving, from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th to 5th and back down as needed without ever touching the clutch, using only the speed of the engine to disengage and engage the gears. Engine speed is extremely important to the life of a manual.

well if your saying that i'm putting the synchros to do all the work for me and that might be the reason why it grinds(trying to match speeds) then i don't think its nessecerley my case... because i do match speeds before shifting/releasing the clutch...

and yes my 3rd pops out to N, well it don't exactley do that unless i remove my foot from the throttle it starts jerking around like a ###(the shifter) i hear this nasty grinding sound and i'm obliged to remove it...

i don't even use 3rd gear now it's 2nd > 4th LOL

thank you for the sugestion

Can you tell if the clutch is disengaging properly? Otherwise you may need to see a transmission specialist. (A search probably wouldn't find much on the MT because very, very few people have an MT Camry).

or just have an experienced manual driver test drive it...

if he drives it perfectly smooth and fine then it's fine.

otherwise take to dealership lols...

easiest way to troubleshoot.

what do you mean by not disengaging properley?

i can hear no noises when dissengaging nor i feel anything from the clutch pedal... it's all normal i guess...
