The brake lights do not come on. I think a few days ago, 1 light was not coming on; now it is both. The central brake indicator on the back window does come on, and the light comes on dimly when the headlights are switched on.
I am presuming because the lights come on with the headlights that it is not the bulbs. I am thinking it might be a fuse. How can I check this pls?
Most tail and brake light bulbs use a double element bulb, hence one might work and the other not. Replace the bulbs and check the contacts for corrosion. They are cheaper and easier to mess with than crawling around under the dash, pulling fuses with your needlenose.

Could be the stop light switch, a fuse or a broken/disconnected wire between the passenger compartment and the trunk.
If the center mounted stop light works it is probably the 2 bulbs.
The taillights are probably dual element bulbs so having them work with the lights on means nothing for the brake light element. They can be checked visually by pulling the bulb.
The high mounted stop light should not light up at all when the headlights are on.
The op says he thought one bulb was out last week and now both are out. They are on the same circuit, so if the switch failed neither would work, and if the fuse failed, neither would work. Car is a 2003. Time for the bulbs to fail. $2 for a pair of bulbs. Check the contacts to see if there is corrosion on them. Short of that, pull each bulb and check with his handy ohm meter. He will find the element open. Fuses generally don't blow without cause.

It is possible for both bulbs to go at once cause most of the time they install together. U can try to examine the bulbs but does sound like it's time to replace them. Not worth a warning ticket. Check manual for which bulb U need and a trip to your local auto store.

It's not likely, besides the OP stated that one went out before the other.
I have the same problem . Brake lights not working. But middle brake light (rear windshield) comes on. Spoiler brake light working. already Checked fuse ,Brake Light Switch, no power at bulb connector, checked ground Related
Repair History - replaced transmission Fluid and all problem started
I will appreciate any of your help.
It's probably the bulb. The circuit is run so that if one side's bulb goes, neither will work. My gf just got an 03 Camry and the first thing I noticed were non-working brake lights, only the third one worked. Replaced the one obviously blown bulb and they both work now.
