Heres what I want to do, I want to black out certain areas of my stock 17" SE rims (yes the outside of the spokes) I'm a budget kinda guy so whats the best way to do this?
ok I know theres powder coating and plain painting. I'm actually wondering if black vinyl stickers would work if cut properly and applied to the sides of the spokes, I actually want to black out part of the inside lip area to make the rim appear larger as well. Is it hard to get a perfect fit? Kinda wondering how well it would stick too since its not really a flat surface and the ends of the stickers would be on edges. I've never custom ordered stickers before, I have another mod in mind as well using the same concept but I'll save it for another thread perhaps.
Personally, my only worry is that the heat from the brakes might melt the adhesive of vinyl. When you want to remove it, you're left with a sticky mess
Have it done professionally or it may look ghetto. Look into some aftermarker 17s that you like and transfer the tires. Those won't cost you arm and leg and will look good.
I have painted the rims before, and you just have to be very patient. Chances of paint starting to chip is very high, then it'll look really bad.
i did that on my f150 that had the az beige inserts on and painted them with spray on wheel paint from walmart. i just taped them off, sanded them down, wiped off and painted. no chipping after 2 years..
Yea the more I think about, I think I should just go with some wheel spray paint. I'd rather use vinyl stickers so its not perminant and the painting process is also pretty time consuming and involves more work to be done properly, but if the vinyl diden't work out I'd just sand and paint over it anyways.
The sticky goo is not a problem, its only on the outer edges of the spokes and I just bought a fresh bottle of goo gone.
gobraphil: Did you use a clear coat paint to finish as well? as I've heard this greatly reduces the chances of chipping. I'm hoping since its only on the outside edges of the spoke and inside of lip chances of chipping would be reduced and would be very hard to notice if it did.
My brother actually had some Mazda 3 rims he used on his Lexus and he just put some Lexus stickers on the hubcaps to cover the mazda emblem, it actually looked perfectly fine and never peeled off, been using them for quite a few years so far.
i didnt use clear. the paint did seem to dull a bit but it still looked great when i got rid of the truckafter 2 years.
Hmm just had a better look at your rim now that I'm not at work and yep thats pretty much exactly what I'm planning except no stripe down the middle of the spokes. How long did that take and how many cans of paint did that require for all four, more than 1?
Looks great, I'm definitely going to use some clear coat though if I do it.

I have some "paint" mockups I may post later too.
tia.
Maybe you could make or find a digital photo and photoshop that first to see what they would look like..
the f150 wheels have a machined face so the painted areas were marked off well. not sure about the camry's. it seems like i used about 2 -3 cans of spray paint.
here's a big pic. I also painted the center cap silver. it was gold...
I think paint would work best, pretty inexpensive and if it starts to chip or fade just do it again..

Thanks for all the info gobraphil. Probably a day or twos worth of work I bet.
This is what I have in mind, it looks pretty bad since I just painted it... with mspaint, having a hell of a time finding photoshop for the "right price" but the black areas are the areas I wanna paint and blackout, I'm sure it'll look pretty good when done right. I still will probably to buy a new set of wheels but I think this simple mod will make the stock ones look so much better.
If anyone wants to photoshop this and properly darken/blackout these areas please do!
I have painted many rims before and they all turned out really good. What you need to do is get primer, flat black, ( ur main paint), and then clearcoat. I recommend getting your paint from shucks since I think they have better quality than getting at like walmart. The wheels I have painted are still in great shape and has never chipped. Put a lot of clearcoat and it should protect ur paint and make it shiny.
All i have to say is patience is key. You will have to take a lot of time to tape the area you want and paint. I say do it and it will make ur wheels look different.
