Harmonic balancer

Is it possible that a harmonic balancer replacement would noticeably effect acceleration and/or power? (I posted this question in the '95 Corolla section, but no response. Nothing about it in searches that I could find). Thanks.

It's not likely.

What makes you ask? Is yours coming apart or coming loose? If so, replace it right away. You don't want to damage the crankshaft and/or the bearings.

It was replaced about two months ago when it got loose and belts started breaking. There is a noticeable decrease in acceleration since immediately after the dampener and belts were changed. I can live with it, but was just curious as to any likely correlation. Thanks.

When you said it got loose, as in the bolt came out and the balancer came loose or the outer ring became separated from the hub? If it is the later, did you check the timing after you replaced the balancer?

I believe the outer ring became separated from the hub, from what I was told.
I had it replaced by a mechanic, so I can't say if the timing was checked or not. They'd have to check the timing belt?
Thanks.

If that is the case, there is a chance that the timing was advanced before the balancer came apart since the timing mark is on the outer ring, which may give you a slight 'boost' in power; however, depending on how far it was advanced your engine may ping under load. Or the timing is retarded right now, rendering you with an engine that isn't putting out its full potential. Follow the instruction to check you timing to see if that is the case. Of course the above scenarios are under the assumption that the timing had been check and adjusted while the outer ring on the balancer had slipped from its original location. BUT, it doesn't really cost you anything if you know how to do it yourself, you just might find the few extra ponies that are missing and improve you gas mileage.
