5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I went to the dealership yesterday to purchased my new Camry. The salesman tried to sell me the Protector Plus as I was discussing the pricing. He did not educate me because he knew I was eager to buy the car.
I did not feel he was professional enough informing me about the product as he was also eager for the sale. I left the dealership and told him I will be back the following day.

Should I purchase the Protector Plus?
Everyone is going to have their own thoughts on this but IMO it is a waste of money.

Rule #1 when buying a car...NEVER show that you are eager to buy the car.
Yep, the big question is "what the hell is Protector Plus?"
And, the corollary, "how much are they trying to screw you out of to get it?"
Doing a little googling, I don't see anything definitive about it -- it sounds like a package of undercoating/paint coating, plus perhaps window etching and such stuff.
If it is such stuff, I'd say the following:
Undercoating: A can of this stuff costs like five bucks. Dealers have been selling it (or trying to) for prices up to and over a few hundred dollars. Utter hogwash. Go buy a can or two and a couple of jack stands, and do it yourself, if you want it that bad.
Paint coating: I don't know of much of anything that won't wear off just as fast as any coat of wax. Just wax your car. There are some things like the 3M plastic coating that might be worth the bucks, but I tend to doubt that anything like that would be anything they're mentioning in this deal.
Any kind of security stuff: I'd bet a vote of all of us would show some abysmally small number of people with etched windows and such. Car alarms cost a couple hundred bucks or so, installed. Get a decent car alarm, instead of any packaged security nonsense.
Bottom line? Sounds like 99% pure dealer profit. Don't you freaking DARE pay for that nonsense.

Alright, the salesman changed his mind because I was concerned about security and he mention the Lojack. Also, he is willing to throw in the PP, but I got to pay for the admin fee and install fee for lojack.. He does not recomment me to get an after market alarm but rather go with the lojack because he say's the camry gets stolen alot.
Anyways, i'm not going purchase anything else but what I came to get....

Thanks for all your help!
I got a simple question for you. Do you want to drive a car, after it been stolen? Depending on your answer, it should tell you if you should get lojack or not
Not so much in Canada or most of the civilized world.
Hahahaha...not one of my friends cars ever been stolen. Lojack is pointless in having unless you're driving an older car which are usually stolen for parts. Why would you want to get your stolen car back, after someone drove it around like they stolen it

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong!
The new "computer chip in the key" has all but prevented auto theft.
Yes, 1990-vintage Toyotas and Hondas have big theft records. Any of the years since the chip-in-the-key technology have virtually no theft records at all.
As has been mentioned, there are a few hotbeds of car theft (LA, etc.) -- if you're not in one, then you are WASTING MONEY BIG-TIME with LoJack and such.
On the flip side, I WILL NEVER OWN A VEHICLE WITHOUT SOME KIND OF A CAR ALARM. You need to keep punk kids from breaking into your vehicle for a few bucks worth of whatever you shouldn't have left out in the open, anyway, and causing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of damage. Have a car alarm, and leave NOTHING WHATSOEVER IN VIEW when you leave your car. "Seats and carpet" is all you'll ever see in my car.
Last time we bought a car from Honda they said that Japanese cars are so reliable that they make a lot of their money off of their extended warranties. I'm sure it applies with Toyota's cars. If I had to buy any car that came without a warranty, it would be a Honda or Toyota.
Different story if you're buying an American clunker. Then again, American cars have longer warranties.
Don't bother with any of the paint/ fabric protection stuff. Order your car, then when they send the after market accessories guy to you refuse to give him the time of day and finish the deal.
