Alright, in addition to my BMW style grill mod and two tone silver/black SE rim mod ideas, I just realized how nice a portable GPS system would fit in the glasses compartment that flips down, so you could flip down the GPS whenever you need it and keep it hidden when you don't. Mine actually fits nicely when opened but wont close, its pretty close but since I dont use that compartment anyways I figure some cutting and it will fit perfectly, I think wireing (power & sound) will be the hard part but very doable.
So my question is, does anyone know how to remove the glasses compartment?
i remember seeing instructions somewhere on tn but i can't recall on which thread but if i remember correctly all you got to do is get your finger tips under the foward facing part of the compartment and give it a nice firm pull down. the forward part has two clips and the rear part has hooks so don't be afraid of using some force.
Thanks for the info guys, very helpful, I'll have a look and post some pics if all turns out good... Hopefully its as easy as it sounds, seems like its a gen 5 thread so I'll look into the manual tomorrow just in case. Yes I have a 6 gen, forgot to mention lol.
Yea, I was hoping he meant the owners manual or something that came with the car, oh well... Thanks for the link, I will check that out.
Well right now I'm kinda compiling a list of mods to do in order of convienence, so far I've contacted a local bodykit shop about the Grille, and they said they can't do it because they dont have the proper manufacturing (Injection molding). So I may try a few other places, but this mod is pretty low on the list until I have more of the standard mods done first.
Download the service manual from bittorrents. And then put that njerald dude on ignore.
And why download the service manual from a bittorrent when its readily available through the link I provided. All you do is download the PDFs or open it by clicking on the link. His answer is a legit answer also. Anything related to dismantling, removal or repairs, its in the service manual.
Yea dcemureviews link works nicely although from what i saw it appears its to remove the entire compartment (domelights, homelink and all) rather than just the sunglass compartment, but it should still prove helpful.
I think bkushner is probably speaking in general due to njeralds err... blunt nature?

Once in a blue moon what he say does contribute to the discussion. But most of his reply/comment is as useless as his "Unbeliable..." that he usually reply.
Anyway, back to the topic. I did try this idea once and like yours my GPS is also almost fit. But after thinking about all the troubles it will cause, it wasn't worth it for me and beside I do use my tray.
My GPS is using the Mini USB which extend out too far. And if I do go on trip, I would want to take it along too. And once in awhile I do use the audio cable so can't have it dedicated to the GPS. And the one thing to top it all off is when the audio and power plug into the GPS at same time, there is a hissing noise in the audio... too annoying.
I'll just use the mount that came with the GPS and most problems solved.

Crap, I thought I posted images of the map/dome housing when I was trying to swap out my bulbs. Well, you do not have to remove the headliner. Even removing the entire housing (pulling down), there is nothing from the inside. I'll see if I still have pictures on my camry...I dont think I do.
Since I dont have pics on me, this will do..
This is without the sunroof buttons but same look. Image shows the sunglass case open. There is no way to remove that section. Only way is to remove the cover from the housing. Even if you were to pull the whole housing off, theres nothing you can do. The inner black piece that you see is one big piece and is part of the housing.
Since it fits the way it is but when closing, it doesnt fit, only thing I can think of to make it fit when closed is to cut an opening of inside the holder.
*EDIT*
Not the actual overhead console but just an idea

Thanks for the info! Actually I was thinking of cutting off the lower gray plastic portion that holds the the glasses, I believe the bump in the middle of the glasses holder is what is keeping the GPS from fitting because it pushes it too high hitting that black area, so I'm thinking when you flip the compartment open it will be flat with no glasses holder (except perhaps the locking mechanism) and then attach the GPS to the newly flattened flip down mount area.
I could probably cut it in place but that would be a pain in the ass. I think I could take the holder out but I'm afraid the spring loaded hinge might also be a pain in the ass to put back properly (I like the opening motion of it :P).
I'll have to have another look at it and see what I can do. But thanks for the input

Another way to measure if the GPS is of right size is when the sunglasses holder is closed, put the GPS underneath it. Is the GPS smaller than the lid? Flip down the lid and put the GPS next to the left or right of the holder. Is it thinner?
I think when the lid is flipped down, you have more room. Not only is the lid further down, but you have more room inside the compartment. That is probably why you're able to fit the GPS but when you close it, you dont. My gf took my Garmin Nuvi so I cant take a picture of what I mean until Wednesday. But I think you know what i mean.
