5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
07 Camry v6 bought spring 2006 so 2.5 years and 19,700 miles. The problem lately that at highway speeds the whole car will shake when applying the brakes. Under 40 no shake. So I took it in for the 20k oil change tire rotation and mentioned the problem. Tech said the rotors were warped. "What did you just say?" I asked? I've replaced rotors/pads on Explorers, Rangers, CJ's, Nissans and a Subaru XT (turbo AWD, yes I'm dating myself all with other 100k miles on the OEM rotors.
While this is the wife's car I drive the most as we commute together to the Metro Station a whopping 6 miles from the house.
Anyone heard of this before? I sway at the dealership that TRD does rotor/caliper upgrades for the scions but what about the Camry?

How about a 07 bought in the spring 06 2.5 years ago, basically one of the first off the truck for the Gen 6 model. 19,741 is the correct mileage when I got to the dealership this am. Clear as mud?
My '07 bought in '06 is having similar but less problem. I can live with it. It doesn't vibrate, it just break unevenly. (want to add that the unevenly break is when the car slow less than 20mph)
If the brakes have not been abused, the likely problem is the lack of a torque wrench when tightening the lug nuts. It seems that most dealers and independants use an air gun set too high to install the nuts. They might use a torque wrench after to make sure that are at the minimum torque but if they have the gun set to 120 ft-lbs and the wrench to 78 ft-lbs, they will be "OK" 100% of the time.
I have an 08 Gen6, purchased in November of 2007, an aggressive driver and mine were warped before 15k. The way you drive definitely affects how the rotors wear.
Dealer resurfaced and replaced pads under warranty.
Would love to get better rotors to handle more aggressive braking than the OEM seem to be designed for.
I have a 2007 Camry LE V6. My front rotors were warped at 27,000 miles. The service manager insisted that the lug nuts were torqued with torque sticks when I had the tires rotated. I brought the car in and they resurfaced them. Drove 3 miles to the interstate, got the car up to 60 mph, applied the brakes and the same vibration!!!!! The invoice says "Rotors resurfaced, vibration gone". Do they actually road test the car after fixing it? I emailed the service manager and got no response. I'm bringing it in next week for re-re-surfacing.
Question? I now have 33,000 miles on the car. I have the 7 yr/100000 mile platinum extended warranty form Toyota. Is resurfacing covered under the extended waranty or only up to 36,000 from the factory waranty? Thanks.
I agree with GeorgiaHybrid, not correctly torqued lug nuts are one of the most common cost of warped rotors.
rsb1445: extended warranty don't usually cover wear items, and brakes are definitely considered as wear item.
N.E.O.
yup, improper break-in when the rotors were new along with the wrong torqued lug nuts will cause premature wear and warped.
I wonder how many of you actually took the time to heat cycle and break in the new brake pads and rotors when you drive your brand new car off of the dealer lot?
