GPS not responding

I have a 2002 SE V6 with OEM navigation system. The screen or navigation buttons do not respond to touch. Stays in the disclaimer screen. pressing "I agree does nothing. Radio / CD will work thought not able to get to preset station screens or any screen. One local dealer has an out of warrantee exchange but the cost is around $850 installed. Have not asked if I could just get the unit and install myself. Is there another less expensive option or something I could do myself. is this a common problem and should the navigation screen be expected to last the life of the car.
thanks
Steve

If it is indeed the touch screen there isn't many other option, except may the wrecking yard.

BTW, on occasion, the display may re-initialize itself if you unplug the power and then plug it back in. Its worth a try.

N.E.O.
