5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I noticed when I turned on the ignition the engine temp monitor was way past the red line. The little red line was touching the odometer of the RPM. It was unusually I thought the engine would overheat. Any cause of this because the car so far has not overheated. I just want to make sure if its a malfunction of something before I take it to the dealer.
Has it actually over heated or is the guage reading incorrectly? If the guage is reading deep in the red the engine itself will be really obviously hot. But if it reads high from start up (cold engine) there is a fault with the temp guage or temp sender.
Did it come back to the bottom when you turn off the engine? It happened to me once also. The red needle went all the way past the H red indicator. When I turned off the engine, it came back to half way. So, I shut off for about 10 - 15 minutes and everything went back to normal.

I actually went to the gym and worked out for an hour or so. Then I came back to my car and the needle went back to normal. So I was relieved. But I really need to get that checked because what if that really happened and the engine was hot but the needle said it was cold.
If that happens and the engine blew would Toyota pay for the damage to the engine since it was their fault for the malfunction.

If car run for 5mins, the temp should stay in the middle/warm. If something is wrong, I don't think it would say that it's warm.
Seem like a glitch. If U can't reproduce it it'll be hard to find out what's wrong.
Need to proof that it's their fault that it blew. It won't be easy if U R the only 1 this happen to. So the most they will do is give you a small discount.

If it's still under warranty, then you're OK.

does anybody else had this same problem. mine did this awhile ago.
im waiting for my wife at her work and when i turn off the engine i notice the temp needle stays in the middle even i take the keys out.
and when i turn on the ignition to on the needle went up to the H fast (like when you turn off the engine and you'll see the needle go down to C or when the engine is warm needle goes to the middle that fast)
so when i open the door (keys with me) the needle went down to C again. i was like WTF?
1 more thing when i left my lights on (not on the auto) and open the door i recently noticed the lights won't turn off automatically.
before when i forgot to turn off the lights and open the door it automatically shuts off.
That happened to me when i had the 05. Both temp and RPM guage were reading wrong. When the Car was idleing it was saying the engine was at 8K rpm and the temp was passed red. I just disconnected the battery and it reset itself. My gen6 has yet to do it...

welcome back johnyzee. i copied your setup putting spacers on trd srings at the rear and kyb struts and i love it.
back on the topic me to never heard of this one. im thinking my battery is dying on my car. haven't change it when i got it. any ideas?
thanks buddy,
those spring boosters really help that heavy sagging butt look and give it a nice raked forward look.
How are those KYB struts, you notice a difference?
To the OP:
it sounds like something electrical, could be a number of things. could be a "sticky needle", cold be poor/corroded contacts somewhere, poor grounding. it's probably more work than it's worth to trace it down or rip apart the dash, especially if it rarely happens. I'm a believer in "grounding wires/big3", especially as the car ages. find the clusters ground/power connections, clean contacts and / or add secondary grounds. take off and clean the grounding contacts, sand them up a bit (as toyota puts grounds over paint), sand around the ground points so the whole ring connector makes contact with metal. As for adding ground wires, battery -ve to chassis, chassis to engine, tranny to chassis, and in your case add one to the fuse block existing ground. You'll notice a better throttle response (ever so slight), slightly faster tranny shifts (in auto), stereo will sound a bit louder, especially if have an amp, etc.
thanks bud, as of kyb i installed the kyb and springs at the same time. but i noticed a lot like its stop bottoming out and handles better. i like the ride quality.
i'll just check my batt if it needs to be replaced. thanks.
I just let it sit overnight and it reset itself. Not quite sure why it happened though. I would just pull the neg. off of the battery for 15 minutes and see if it resets.
