2AZ-FE tapping sound..Is this normal????

I have a 03 Camry with 2AZ-FE. Took it to the dealership for a colant leak and they replaced the short block. Stud bolts stripped/streached. It was under warranty. About 1500 miles later I started hearing a tapping sound coming from the left side of the head. So I took it back and had the dealer and let them hear the sound. They agreed to replace the intake manifold and the spring tensioner for the belt. All under warranty. I drive the car another 500 miles and the tapping noise came back. Took it back in to the dealer they said to drive another 5000 miles and them bring it back to see if the sound gets worse. My question "Is this a normal sound???? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well tapping can be a few different things. Does it come from the head or is it more external to the engine?

The tapping sound comes from the head. Within the valve train. The sound is intermittent.

my '03 camry LE 4 cyc makes a clicking noise somewhere in the engine bay on the driver's side, faint but still audible.....was never able to identify the source even after serpentine belt was changed. I too had a coolant leak, but it was from the waterpump and it was replaced under warranty.

If your mechanic charged you for changing your timing belt, you were TAKEN! You engine has a timing chain and doesn't normaly need replacing.

he said serpantine belt....
water pump failure on the 2az is fairly common

the ticking noise is just the noise of the 2az valvetrain...they generally are a noisy engine
post a vid of the noise, as that would help us distinguish what the noise could be

I guess I should read more carefully! I agree with you though, the 4 bangers make light tapping noises that many people mistake for engine problems.

I had a very distinct tick at the time of delivery, and was told the same old B.S. it's just the way it sounds. figured it was perhaps a valve train issue as well, and the VSV valve will make a distinctive tick when it comes on line, but this was different and definitely near the WP, tensioner, etc.

Did a little research and found a TSB at the Jasper engine site,

http://www.jasperengines.com/pdf/Toy...ineNoiseTB.pdf

and told the dealer about it. I got the fix done and it is quieter in my experience, but is still there. Might be worth a try for you folks with effected years. Good luck!
