When I first start up my 03 in the morning, I'll shift it into reverse and I can feel it kick in pretty hard. Then it does it again when I shift from reverse to drive. But after I drive it for a while, its really smooth. Is this normal? Or is my tranny taking a dump on me?

it's normal. shifts will be rough until the car/transmission fluid warms up.

How long do you wait after startup before shifting? The engine will run faster (sometimes significantly faster) than warm idle, as a way of warming the motor and minimizing emissions. If you're one of the type that turns the key, slams it into gear, and goes, you're probably shifting before the motor winds down. Give it a few minutes and let the motor get to regular idle - the motor and transmission will thank you for it.

Especially motor. It will build a lot of carbon in it due to lack of air...

I also feel a jolt on cold start ups. But it is enough to warm it up 20 to 30 seconds. Start driving after that and warm your engine while in motion.

On cold starts the engine idles higher. Putting it into gear at high idle will cause that.

Check your mounts and tranny fluid level.
