Ignition key will not release

Hi guys.

So when I park, from time to time (becoming more and more common) my car will refuse to release my ignition key. I put it in park and the key will not turn all the way to the correct position to remove the key.

Any ideas?

Dealer time... Go take it back, it's still under warranty anyway.

Stop keeping tension on the steering wheel when you shut the car off.

I agree ith TRD VVTi. Its the tension on the steering wheel. You just have to slightly turn the wheel and the key will come out.

Its similar to when you take your key out of the ignition and turn the steering wheel-- the steering column will lock. You just need to turn the wheel in the same direction to release it.

Thanks for the replies guys.

My car is long out of warranty, just for the record.

It's not the steering wheel tension thing, you can turn the wheel any direction you want and it won't make a difference, so far as I can tell.

it is fully in park, what I'm concerned has happened is that the sensor that is supposed to know when it is in park is fouled up.

I will have to pay attention next time to whether or not the doors unlock.

I'll update this thread accordingly.

You probably need a new ignition lock cylinder.

What he said. I don't know if this your case but people can have their key rings with a bunch of stuff on them. The weight can force the ignition key and subsequently the cylinder out of alignment.
