2005 camry rotational tire pattern

How should I rotate the tires on my 05 camry? The book seems to treat it as a directional pattern (front goes back, back goes front), however a mechanic told me a long time ago the best rotation pattern for fwd is criss-crossing the wheels to maintain even wear on the wheels)?

Is there a reason toyota recommends a directional rotation for this vehicle?

Thanks,
guid

p.s. I do not have directional tires

Cross the front tires as you rotate them to the rear and move the rear straight forward on non-directional tires.
