5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys, so my engine is finally at the 200k point, and i am thinking of putting in the gen 5 camry v6 3.3L engine instead of my 2az-fe. I am still doing research, and wanted to know if the v6 3.3L would fit my gen 5 camry? is the 4 cylinder engine bay different from the v6? I wanted to put the v6 3.3L in it because its 230hp and i think that would be a perfect amount of HP for my camry. Current 157hp just doesnt cut it for me However the SE camry that comes with the 3.3L has a 5spd Auto Transmission, my tranny is 4 speed.. like all the LE 4 cylinder models. I would like to get a new engine without having to put in a new tranny, mine was just rebuilt and has kevlar clutches and a torque converter. So its strong, but just not sure if its good for the v6.

what? kevlar clutches "and a torque converter"? toyota auto transmissions already have one of those.
the u241e is a totally different transmission than the u151e, and very likely does not cross-fit between the 2az-fe and 3mz-fe.

but more details on the "kevlar clutches"?
when i had my tranny rebuilt, i told the guy that im going to be putting a turbo on my car, so i need the tranny to be able to withstand the extra amount of HP, so he said he can make it better by putting a torque converter and better clutches.. and thats what he did. But instead of turboin'g it which would give me same result as a v6, i think puttign in a v6 would be cheaper.. im really in a tough spot, i've invested a lot of money i my car already, and i figure i might as well do the engine too.
You do realize that all auto tranmissions use torque converters right......
And you do realize that they most definately used stock clutches and giggled when you picked up your car......

theres always uncertainty about everything when you take in your car for repairs, you're right. It was a good shop though, lets hope he wasn't "giggling" lol. Thats why i usually do everything myself.. but there are some things we can't repair ourselves such as transmission.
If you want a car with a v6, trade it for a car with a 6. You aren't going to swap an I4 out for the V6. About the only similarities are the outer skin. You will need to replace the engine, transmission, computer system, half axles, struts---everything.
