Used 2007 from Coastal town

A 2007 Camry XLE is up for sale. I like everything about this vehicle, except for the CarFax report. Even the report has nothing explicitly bad to say:

It was registered and used in Buras, Louisiana (which I think is a coastal town).

Next, there is not a single service report in the 1 yr and 8 months that its owner owned it.

Am I over-reacting?

The car will be under the original warranty for another 20 K miles or 1 year. Also, dealer is a chevy dealer and so is not offering the pre-owned certification program that Toyota dealers offer.

What do you folks think?
Regards,
SJN

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That said, as with any used car, I'd take it to a trusted mechanic and have them give it the once over before buying.

The warranty will cover you for any defects, but the mechanic will check for any abuse or neglect on the previous owner's part. (which is not covered under warranty). It's still a pretty new car with low miles, so I doubt that it has any serious problems- but have your mechanic look at it just in case.

Thx, 98CamryLE! Since this is a dealer, I did not think I'd be able to take the car to a mechanic, but will give it a try tomorrow.

Buras has a levy almost on either side of it to keep the mighty Mississippi river flowing. The town is "okay"...They are still recovering from hurricane Katrina back in 05'. They didn't start selling 07's in August 05'...( I am pretty sure of it, correct me if I am wrong )...So you don't have to worry about it being a rebuilt car from flooding.

If Carfax came back clean and you are happy with the vehicle, I'd say "Grab your balls and jump in"...

CarFax is WORTHLESS!!!!!!!

They are only responsible for the data sources they have agreements with. Example:

I bought my 2002 Volvo S80 T6 used. When I bought it (reputable dealer) I pulled a CarFax report, took it to my trusted mechanic and to a used car wholesaler/body shop owner friend. Everything checked out and was clean, no accidents or service other than routine. Even the wholesaler's paint gauge and eyeball said everything was kosher. 2 years later when I went to sell the car, I provided my CarFax to a prospective buyer. He pulled one and accused me of fraud because the current report showed an accident. It was from before I bought the car. I contacted the shop that did the repair and they showed me the file and pictures. They are now my body shop for life because their repair was top notch and undetectable.

That said, I called CarFax to complain. Their response was that the accident data was from a source they recently added and therefore they have no liability since the fine print of their "guarantee" states that they are only responsible for data sources they have agreements with. Like nay database, it is only as good as the data in it.

don't tell them you want to take it to your mechanic..just ask for a test drive (take someone with you so the dealer won't go with you, and make an appt with your mechanic..or even Toyota first) then take it in.

How can the dealer won't go with you? I thought everytime you test drive a car, the salesman has to come with you. What if you just took off?

Plaquemines Parish.

You're in Dallas, as am I. Doesn't Plaquemines tell you something? If nothing else I would insist on pulling the seats out and the carpet and looking for mud. Pull the wheel well enclosures out and feel back in there for nasties. Personally i would not touch it at almost any price, but you have your own priorities.

here they take a copy of your license...and usually if you're with your family, they salesman won't come with you..i've never had one come with me..well once cause the car was out of gas and he filled it, then i dropped him back off at the dealer before taking it for a test drive. (was my Camry actually).

I guess we can be trusted in Canada

Why not go to a Toyota dealer and price one out? you'd get a better warrenty and better service. Might have to pay a bit more, but it's worth less hassle.

Just tell them you want to take to your mechanic, we let people do it all the time. If they say no walk away.
