5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was about to start an install on a 2009 Toyota Camry, part of the install will be sound deadening material for doors, floor etc. My concern before I start is air bags. I understand the car has 7-10 airbags placed around the front drive and passenger area. I already know not to mess with wires with yellow tape. During installs sometimes one needs to run mic or ant wires up thru the window pillors etc. These areas possibly have airbags thus I would have to remove a panel which might have an airbag. Is it best to work around these areas or is someone familiar with areas (air bags locations) to stay away from?
Another concern was that airbags are installed in the sides of the seats and if I needed to remove the seats would this be a problem?
If this info is already on the forum can you please direct me to the thread? Thank you again
Just make sure you disconnect the battery before the install, and dont hook it back up until your done.

1) Driver airbag in the steering wheel.
2) Passenger airbag in the dash.
3) Driver knee airbag beneath the steering wheel- the panel it pops out of is labeled.
4 & 5) Driver and Passenger side airbags located in the sides of the seats.
6 & 7) Curtain side airbags that pop out of the ceiling, but have related wires and components in the A and C pillars.
To be honest, if you are going to be doing an install that requires you to disassemble the interior- especially if you are going near the airbags- you really should buy the repair manual that explains, step by step, the process of removing and reinstalling interior components and parts.
If you are messing with airbags during an install for someone else- and you don't put things back correctly, you are opening yourself up to severe lawsuits in the event that the airbags don't function properly in a crash.
If you are doing an install for your own car- you are putting your safety in jeopardy. In addition, if you do get into an accident, and your insurance company somehow finds out that you were messing with the safety equipment and it failed as a result, it gives them one hell of a reason to deny coverage.
Whatever you decide, make sure that you think very carefully before doing any disassembly of the interior. And as stated above, make sure you disconnect the battery before doing anything even remotely near the airbags.
Exactly WHY I'm asking questions before starting or even considering such a job. I can work around the dash bags as well as the pillars, my main concern was removing the seats. Before all the extra airbags taking out the seats was a matter of 4 bolts and perhaps disconnecting a few harnesses. However today with air bags built into the seats I have to ask first before making any errors.
Has anyone taken out the seats in a 2009 Camry with airbags? Would it be as simple as just disconnecting the battery?
I agree with the poster above, thus my post before doing anything to discuss it. I would not want to blow a bag or cause it not to function properly.
If you disconnect the battery, you are save to remove the seat just like when there are no side airbags on the seat. The only bad part is that you can move the seat to get to the bolts if you have power seats.

its late n i dont feel like reading what a lot of ppl wrote
when u disconnect the negative battery terminal, wait AT LEAST 90 seconds, VVEERRYYYY important bc the airbag module has it own separate battery incase of emergencies and by disconnecting the negative battery terminal, it slowly disconnects the battery to the airbags
with what your doing, its very important that u wait 90 seconds, b4 u get ur supplies ready, go out n disconnect ur negative terminal n then start gathering up ur stuff, by the times u get ur materials ready the car will be ready

Fine, except there are no separate batteries for the air bags.
You are waiting for capacitors to slowly discharge after disconnecting the battery....
The more replies I get the more I feel it's not such a big deal to remove ONLY the seats which contain air bags. Keeping in mind that I need to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery, "wait about 10 minutes" to ensure the capacitors or left over power which may operate the air bags is discahrged.
Removing the seats? Is it just (4) bolts and a harness the connects the power
to the seat as well as the airbag electronics?
I would not be doing nothing more then removing the entire seat, thus the enclosed air bags would not be touched. The purpose of this as stated before is to add sound deadening material to the floor of the Camry. Then replace the seat and bolt it back in, re-attaching any electrical connections.
