5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a question and i am very confused,i went to best buy and they told me my car comes with 6X9s and i should change to the polk or infinity kapa speakers but when i contacted crutchfiled people they told me that aftermarket speakers will not fit in my car ?
so here i am now can someone please suggest what should i do
Ideally what i like to do is to replace the stock speakers with the 6x9s with aftermarket and hook up a amp to pull the speakers
Yeah, I came across the same problem on Crutchfield but I think it is safe to say that 6th-gen Camrys do have 6x9 speakers. Crutchfield must not have updated their database or something.
There is actually a 6x9 speaker called Critical Mass that is specifically manufactured to fit our Camrys as an aftermarket replacement without any drilling/cutting/modification. Although they are "shallow" speakers, I think as long as you take off the midrange speakers on the front-doors, you can use the existing frame for any aftermarket speakers. I have actually gotten myself 2 pairs of Polk 6x9 components with a 4-channel JL amp. I am waiting for a free weekend to do the install myself.

I had the same problem except I didnt waste gas by going to see the idiots at best buy.
Call crutchfield and get speaker adapter plates. Item #142SA69 for your doors.
It is a 6x9 bracket that can fit a 6.5 speaker. I went with Polk db6501 in the doors and the rear deck. They fit perfectly with no problems. The reason why the 6x9's on crutchfield say they dont fit, is because they are not taking into consideration of these brackets.
Here is the kicker though:
Order one set of db6501 thru crutchfield and they will throw in a different style of speaker bracket for free. THAT is the style of bracket you will need for your rear deck. The one I listed above, is the one you will need for your doors if you choose to upgrade your door speakers.
OR, you can go the cheap route and make your own out of MDF. If you go to the audio forum on this site and search for 'speaker templates', the thread should pop up. Simply print off the template, trace onto MDF, and cut away. They are the same thing.

Good luck.
You dont need to fabricate or cut away or mod the car, nor do you have to buy expensive shallow mount speakers for our car.
Instead of modding the car to fit the needs of the project, modify the project to fit the needs of the vehicle.
my post above is the simplest and most inexpensive way.
AND, you will not be disappointed with the Polk component setup. It is absolutely unbelievable.

I've got a pair of 6x9 speaker adapter,I bought it and didn't use it, if you are interested in them PM me.
You are correct. But if you try to replace the rear deck stock 6x9's with a brand name set of 6x9's they will not fit due to the operation of the trunk arm getting in the way of the speaker magnets. That is why you need those speaker brackets to act as a spacer.

thanks for the reply and just to make sure i understand you right. i have to buy the 6.5 speakers and not 6X9s and have to get those adpator palates to fit the speakers in my car
so how does they sound after all this or you think i should just have a sub in the car that will be easier and a cheaper option ?
When you remove them you will see how light they are.
I replaced the rear 6x9 with new adaptors Pyle blue serries $44 delivered.
The front doors with 6.5 with adaptors with Infinity woofers $30
Adaptors $40 ebay
Used front stock tweeters.
I keep the bass all the way up and only think of adding a powered sub and 4 channel amplifier every once in a while and it sounds great and looks stock.
I also added the Dice ipod interface it is excelent.

You can get the adapter that will work with 6x9 for the door speakers.
I have 6x9 Bose speakers front and back speakers.
Ebumdue just chose 6.5 speakers because he likes it that way.
It's your choice.

I found the old thread from the Audio forum with the templates, but the links to the templates are no longer good. Anybody happen to have saved those templates??
The way i did mine was... in our gen5, i made some templates with 1/4" MDF.
In the gen6 i didnt feel like making the adapter, but since i knew the speakers werent getting taken out i just used some adhesive sealant (similar to jb weld) and just glued them in .
If i had a 90 degree drill i would've just drilled some new holes and use some new screws to hold them down. Wouldve been much easier.
yeah basically for the rears, you can just make a baffle out of 1/4 , 1/2 mdf wood, to give you enough clearance. I removed my rear speakers b/c i dont care for rear fill.
